Modern Farmhouse Style

By Kate Riley April 14, 2015

I ran into a long time friend this morning at the post office and we were talking about architecture and real estate and how nice it would be to build here (but way too expensive for our pocketbook) and how much we really love the modern farmhouse style and how it fits so nicely with not only the landscapes here in Sonoma County but any country property with extra acreage.

Many of the wineries in this area have adopted a similar style for their tasting rooms, a blend of contemporary clean lines with classic farmhouse style, pitched roof and covered porch required! Often the exterior is vertical board and batten siding with stone or concrete mixed in for variety.

What is also common is the use of larger windows, and in the lower level community spaces that open up to the outdoors, they often extend from floor to ceiling. Many of the windows you’ll find have no window treatments in order to bring in the natural light and views of the surrounding landscape.

In the kitchen, the cabinets are Shaker, the metal fixtures are industrial or barn style such as gooseneck. Wood is always present and in mixed tones.

Dining rooms include raw wood farmhouse tables in traditional or modern X base styles, the Tolix or Windsor chair completes the look.

And it’s a universal truth that in any modern farmhouse you’ll find sliding barn doors as a feature to close off and open up at least one space.

You know me, always a fan of contemporary meets classic, so the modern farmhouse style is a favorite!

  1. Love everything! This is such an inviting design style and I love the pops of unexpected color in some of the rooms.

  2. I’m from Kentucky and have visited the wine country (Sonoma and Napa) on two occasions. Both times we stayed in beautiful rental homes with many of the features you have highlighted above. Such a lovely lifestyle! Thank you for this post which “takes me back” and has me longing for our next visit to your area of the world.

  3. Love the simplicity of the modern farmhouses. Any suggestions for which white exterior paint colors to pull off this clean understated look?

  4. Love, love love this look! I have the old farmhouse but not the open airy look inside. Thanks for some wonderful ideas.

  5. This so seems to be the thing right now. I too love it. I think Fixer Upper has really catapulted this to the top of the design pile. I think with the clean lines it can stay timeless. It is also so DIY friendly. Making a farmhouse table or other furniture is actually within a lot of people’s ability. I can’t make an ornately carved traditional or Asian piece, but I can make a chunky leg rustic table. I think we all need several houses in several different styles to live out all our design dreams.

  6. Love everything about this style – it brings back the most wonderful memories of the two weeks we spent on the farm every summer when we were growing up. My grandfather designed and built the house he and my grandmother lived in and I have fewer memories as I was just a toddler, but he also built the house my great aunt and uncle lived in down the road and this is where we visited. We were visiting in the late 40’s and the 50’s so these were old homes but I can still describe those homes in detail and what so impressed by young mind at the time. For my budget kitchen redo in my ever so slightly Spanish bungalow style home, I’m aiming for this look and feel. Love the warmth that comes through in every picture.

  7. Oh I’m pinning this. This is inspiration for my bedroom! (I still live with my parents.) Once I get the wind of a bohemian style post, my home decor style is written in the stars! Thanks, girl!
