This is a story of a DIY project that’s kind of like a good chick flick. It opens with the main character – she has a good life, a great idea, and even better intentions, but as a result of her brazen personality and wily cleverness gets herself in trouble and ends up in a miserable position which requires that she completely change her thinking. She ponders her mistakes, comes up with a simpler plan, changes course, makes amends, and in the end she gets her man.
I’m not kidding, the story of my fall wreath is a scary parallel. Sit back, grab a beverage, and listen to my tale. Once upon a time there was a fair maiden who had a grand idea. Let’s call this fair maiden Kate. She had long flowing chestnut hair that glistened in the sun and in this fairy tale, she’s a Size 2.
Kate lived in a town surrounded by rolling hills and fields of natural grasses {cue the slow motion twirling in a peasant cotton skirt to Sting’s ‘Fields of Gold’}. The adjacent fields made her think that a fall wreath crafted out of natural grasses was a totally brilliant idea. Her source of inspiration was none other than this this wheat wreath by the reigning Queen Martha. Inspired, she wandered into those nearby fields of gold and gathered her grasses while she may.

Back at the castle, the maiden took her basket of glistening golden grasses, clipped them and attached them to a basic cardboard wreath form with floral wire, much like she had in the past with this lavender wreath.

Hiya folks! I’m in the mood for something more whimsical, less traditional this year for the front door Christmas wreath!

Since we’re not hosting Thanksgiving, the fall magnolia wreath came down (held up all season!) and the wintery white wreath is up! This one I made with three kinds of branches, faux snow, some springs and small ornaments found at my local craft store. I’m mixin’ up the real and the fake, that’s how I roll.

Fall is one of those seasons that just happens for everyone at a certain moment. For me, last year, it was just something in the air. This year, it happened to be the turning of the calendar to my favorite month of September.
I was playing in the park with my girl a few weeks ago, and noticed the beauty of the fallen leaves from a nearby magnolia tree. It was instant inspiration! Up close, I loved the shape and caramel color of the leaves so I thought they would make a perfect wreath for our front door.

This year, my requirements for a fall wreath were this: cheap and easy ! Here’s this year’s front door wreath, and the best part is that it cost me less than $5 dollars.

The outdoor rug I found last year at Pier One.

I am so fond of wreaths at Christmastime, aren’t you? For me, decorating my front door wreath is just as important as the tree. My favorite front door wreaths are vibrant, festive, and most importantly, welcoming. When I came across two very different wreaths in my stash of Christmas decor it struck me that they might look marvelous if combined.

I have a ‘spend less, spend more’ goal this December, meaning I seek spend less at the retail stores, and spend more time with my loved ones.
Creating this wreath in about an hour with what I already had at home allowed me to do both.

I’m completely over Halloween, however I’m still loving the all of the autumn hues. I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to the warm spice colors of fall, yet I confess I’m definitely getting in the mood for Christmas. I find myself in a flux, and somewhat in transition.
It feels wrong to cheat Thanksgiving and jump right into Christmas. Here in America, Thanksgiving deserves its place in the spotlight. The history, the traditions, the family gatherings, the feast ! Thanksgiving is so heartfelt, so family focused, and so patriotic.
But I can’t help but be influenced by the beauty of Christmas that is everywhere, especially in magazines and in retail stores. After all, Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year. I object to the holiday’s decor coming out in September – that is ridiculous. However, I do enjoy the glimpse of sparkle of the Christmas season, even in early November.
When I spied a crimson wreath in the Crate and Barrel holiday catalog, I wanted to make my own version, just not with crimson colors. Rather, I wanted a wreath in green tones that I could confidently display in November, but also one that would also carry me through until mid December. So I came up with my own version of a transitional wreath. Acceptable for November, yet festive enough for December.

This hydrangea wreath was extremely easy to make. And mine (hush hush) was less expensive than the Crate + Barrel crimson version.
