Hey all, happy Friday! Y’all know I have a weakness for French style dressers and can’t resist a good one when I spy it, especially at a thrift store! I thought I’d share a quick little dresser makeover I finished up this week.

I spied this vintage dresser just as it was coming in the door at a local thrift shop. The wood was damaged in places, but it’s a well made piece and solid wood. Wood putty filled the cosmetic flaws, and two coats of AS Chalk Paint in a custom mix prettied it up in a shade of barely gray almost blue.

I’m still playing around with my two quarts of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint leftover from this mirror and this table. This time I mixed them, using 2 parts Old White to 1 part Paris Gray (which I’m noticing has a hint of blue to it, especially after it’s waxed).

Chalk paint easily distresses with a sanding wedge, and I follow it up with a clear paste wax – lately I’m using Johnson’s. Rub ‘n Buff is the quickest way to freshen up vintage hardware like this and give it that ‘Antique Gold’ glow.

This revamp only took a few hours since since there’s no priming with this kind of paint. I even painted it indoors on a tarp since there’s little to no odor with the AS Chalk Paint. Pics are less than stellar today since the light was fading fast, but it looks so classy in person. This piece will eventually get sold at a local shop.

What DIY projects are you up to this weekend? I’m thinking of restaining a tabletop in between the kids’ soccer games and hoping for a little wine tasting adventure. Wishing you all a relaxing weekend and cooler temperatures. Those of you on the east coast, stay safe!

Several months ago, I found a cane arm chair at a thrift store and just had to bring it home. Something about its shape spoke to me. As I mentioned before, I had every intention of placing it in our master bedroom, as a place for ‘The King’ of this castle to take off his shoes at the end of the day. Unfortunately, over the course of this makeover, ‘The Queen’ happened to fall in love with it, and thinks it might just belong downstairs.

I stripped it down to its frame before the holidays began, but sadly, it was cast aside for the frenzy of Christmas crafts and holiday décor. I tried to finish it before Christmas when I discovered how to make double welt cord, but then my last needle broke and the chair was returned to the garage. This past weekend, I returned to this project, and finally finished it!

Here is the chair ‘Before’:

And ‘After’:

I kept it classic this time. I didn’t pick a snazzy modern fabric or the latest geometric for the upholstery to wow you. Instead, I chose a neutral camel velvet because I wanted it to be a timeless piece ~ one I could rotate throughout the house based on whim, feeling, and mood ~ all the things that dictate furniture placement in my home these days.

Here’s the brief ‘How To’:

First, I stripped the chair down to its frame, then gave it a coat of RustOleum’s ‘Canvas White’ gloss spray paint.

Note, there is a basic wood frame with springs that sits inside the seat of this chair (not shown). I stretched the velvet to fit the back of the chair and stapled it in place.

Next, I added new foam, batting, and then the velvet on top, all stapled in place with a staple gun.

For the new cushion, I used the old fabric as the template.

Do you have disappearing ink pen? They’re a fabulous magician’s tool for marking your fabric before you sew all the pieces in place. The ink disappears the next day. Genius! I found mine at Joann’s Fabrics in the sewing section.

I stitched up some basic piping in a casing like I mentioned here and then a simple slipcover around 3” foam for the entire seat.

I attached the foam wrapped in batting, and new slipcover to the wood seat frame mentioned above, then attached it to the chair frame. As a last step, I attached my double welt cord with some hot glue.

There is one thing I learned from this latest makeover: it will be a long time before I reupholster anything with velvet. It is not a forgiving fabric, rather, it’s a temperamental stretchy diva of a fabric.

Is it absolutely perfect? No Siree. Is it good enough for me? Yes indeedy!

I am rather proud of the back, it is lovely.

Do you approve of the new lattice pattern wool rug? I exchanged it for the blue version you saw here. If you love it too, you can buy it from RugsUSA. I had big plans to take this chair upstairs and let ‘The King’ use it for himself. Alas, I think it might just have to live downstairs for awhile to make ‘The Queen’ happy.

Speaking of The King, have you seen ‘The King’s Speech’ ? We saw it this past weekend, hello Colin Firth? Incredible! I’m in love love love with Mr. Darcy. And he won the Golden Globe for ‘Best Actor’ last night!

As great at the story was, I also loved the cinematography. Several walls throughout the film took my breath away. Some were the gorgeous wallpapers from Lionel’s home (Geoffrey Rush who plays the speech therapist), big props to the film’s set decorator and art director. The wall in Lionel’s office just mesmerized me. Layers of muted but colorful plaster, like a giant piece of abstract art. Stunning!

I highly recommend the film, but note I’m a lover of well acted period dramas that tug at your heart strings! This one definitely qualifies.

What about you? Dragged anything home from a thrift store lately?

xoxo,

I had big plans yesterday, big plans to get a lot done. I kinda sort of got a few things done. Presents from Santa for the kids? Thank you Toys ‘R Us. Party ware? Check. Outdoor canopy rented for overflow because there’s a storm a comin’ and I just counted 80 on the RSVP list and need extra square footage pronto? Check. And gulp.

Amidst the party preparations, I made a huge mistake. No wait, not a mistake, a strategic detour. Between retail stores, I conveniently found myself in the parking lot of the local thrift store. It’s been over three weeks, how could I resist?

I spotted some fab tufted velvet chairs in shockingly good shape. I especially love the office chair to the left. Recovered in peacock blue, it would look so much like Emily’s.

This headboard rocked my world. Oh how lovely it would be refinished in gray, black or cream. Perhaps a touch of glaze in the crevices? Gorgeous.

So many perfect end tables needing just a little love and affection a.k.a stain or primer and paint.

This classic shape just needs freshened. Can you see it in a bold color?

There were a plethora of dressers and sideboards today. Oh the potential!

Whenever I hear the word ‘plethora’, I think of when El Guapo says: “Jefe, would you say I have a plethora of piñatas?” 1000 points if you can name that movie.

I just had to have this chair.

I’m thinking silver leaf on these legs then reupholstering the entire chair in pale velvet, and using tack strips to finish the back. This chair is the perfect candidate for that fun trick. You like it?

I perused all sorts of Christmas stuff too, and as always, it’s a treasure hunt. You thrifters know, at these stores you have your mix of The Good . . .

with The Bad and The Ugly.

Eww.

I found a few festive things all for a dollar. This peacock striped ornament and a dozen sweet placecard holders, perfect for that Valentine’s Day Murder Mystery dinner party I’m thinking about.

Speaking of the deep teal colors on the tree, check out this post where the lovely Taylor created a party outfit from my Christmas tree, plus a few more outfits from other bloggers’ trees. Now why couldn’t I think of that?

I couldn’t resist this sleigh that looks so much fresher after a coat of white spray paint.

I think I’ll line it with a few cloth napkins, then fill it with Christmas cookies for the party, instead of the ornaments. Fun, right?

And now I do believe I’m done. I truly believe that will be the last ‘thrift store’ post of 2010. No wait, that will be the last thrift store post of the second week of December of 2010. Yep, that’s a promise I can keep.

Hey, if you’re shopping for gifts today, don’t forget so many retailers are offering Free Shipping (two of my favorite words) so check out Free Shipping Day to see all the retailers participating.

Happy shopping and holiday weekend friends!

Ho Ho Ho!

Last year I remodeled my home office, and it’s been a genuine pleasure working in this pretty and personalized space. For the longest time, I was loving the sofa that sat on one wall, but over time, paperwork started piling up, and I reasoned I needed a more practical solution if I really was going to run a business from home. So I made some changes!

I started with a credenza I found at (where else?) a thrift store. A few weeks ago, I stumbled across this piece for $40 dollars ~ it was the perfect size measuring six feet long and mostly solid wood, but the finish was all wrong wrong wrong. First, the top is laminate, and all scratched up. Ick. Second, the base was a different shade of honey tone wood that clashed in my eyes. Usually, I like mid century modern style furniture in a medium stain, but this two-tone finish just wasn’t working for me, so I gave it a makeover to suit my space.

Before:

After:

Slate blue/gray paint + sleek contemporary pulls + geometric pattern on top = perfect!

Some of you are probably wondering how the heck did I get such straight painted lines on this piece? Well, it was tricky, but I’ll tell ya how!

First, let’s start at the beginning. Scratched laminate top? No.Thank.You. Slick surfaces never deter me, no sirreee! My favey fave oil based primer to the rescue to cling baby cling!

Here you can see I’m painting the laminate shelf on the inside. Remember oh yes, oh yes oh yes you can paint laminate! All it takes is the right kind of primer. This is it! (You can also use the Zinsser oil based shellac in the red can too.) I roll mine on with a foam roller for speedy coverage, then follow it up with a brush to keep it all even.

Note the can says "No sanding" but people ask me all the time if that is for real. Peeps, it is fo real. BUT, that said, I always ‘scuff up’ my piece with a coarse sanding pad beforehand. Call me crazy but something inside my little brain tells me that scuffed up surface will hold the primer better, but I could just be living in a bubble. Anyway, I do scuff up my piece then I wipe it down. I don’t degloss or sand away the varnish, I simply scuff it up. Got it ? Repeat after me. Scuff scuff scuff. OK, that’s enough.

  .

Moving on. Knowing I was going to paint it dark, I gave the surface a quick coat of deep tint (water based) primer over the white oil based Zinsser. Why the dark primer? Because it ensures your dark paint will stay true to its color.

It’s not absolutely necessary when painting a piece dark, but I find you risk having to add an extra coat or two or three of paint, so I use a coat of dark primer cause it’s a guarantee I can get one coat coverage with my dark paint. And I can’t find a dark tint oil based primer that’s as good as Zinsser, I’m still searching.

..

Next, I thought I was sooooo smart to paint the rough pattern in white, lay painter’s tape on top, then add the gray paint over the top of that. No. Bad idea. I ended up with horribly uneven lines and had to do the pattern all over again. And I know better! I had such an easy time painting stripes on this dresser so I should have followed that technique. Sadly, I didn’t and the lines were just awful.

First attempt:

This I have learned. The best way to get a straight stripe line on a flat surface is to peel up the painter’s tape while the latex paint is still somewhat wet! Don’t wait until it’s completely dry. Peel it off slowly when it’s wet. Reason being, once latex paint dries, it peels, and it takes little pieces of the stripe with it.

Therefore, I declare, wet paint is good for making stripes!

Aaaaaaand this is how I should have done the geometric pattern in the first place, but hey, this gal’s still learning. This is also a great time to mention that the final paint color on this piece is a slate blue/gray color by True Value called ‘Avoidance’. It ended up being a little bluer and less charcoal than I really wanted, but oh well. It still works!

**Please note, I have no experience painting stripes on textured walls. For those of you who have, please feel free to chime in and share your secrets for perfect stripes on textured walls. We’re listening!

I gave this credenza two coats of Polycrylic in Gloss for added sheen. Me likey shiny. Pur-tay! I also added some contemporary hardware I found at True Value.

This piece would have been just okay refinished in gray, but the addition of the sleek nickel pulls and the white geometric pattern makes it something special and one-of-a kind. I love it! It’s so nice to have all this storage for paperwork and now at last practical has met pretty.

Practical, meet pretty. Pretty, meet practical. I think you’ll get along swell.

Hiya! I hope you had a lovely weekend! As gorgeous as the blue skies were around here, I confess I spent little time outdoors. Shame on me, wasting a perfectly fine October weekend indoors. Well I didn’t completely waste it. I just ignored those beckoning blue skies because there is some major fall housekeeping going on around these parts. Plenty of filing kept me occupied. Approximately 93 lonely socks found their mate, and my closet transitioned from blue sky to gray sky weather. Out came the sweaters and scarves and boots, and away went the flip flops, tank tops and swim suits. They live to unflatter another day.

Thankfully my fabric from Tonic Living arrived last week, and I was able to work up a little office chair revamp. I’ve been wanting a swivel chair for some time, and also to add another fun fabric to the space.

I found this dated swivel chair at the thrift store for $5 bucks! I stripped it, painted it, and reupholstered it with a P. Kauffman ‘Soho’ graphic fabric in deep espresso. I was really close to choosing a glossy white crocodile fabric, but with all the white furniture in the room I thought that might be overkill, so I opted for the fun punchy pattern in chocolate and cream.

The first thing I did was remove the base and tape off the rolling feet. I wanted to paint over the oak wood and brass trim because I prefer the legs a more modern glossy cream color.

While the paint dried, I removed the peachy tan tweed like fabric. It was old and oh-so-icky.

It was a surprise and a relief to find the foam underneath was covered in thin plastic, so I saw no need to replace it, since there were no odor issues. All it needed was a little batting. I didn’t feel like adding more tufted buttons like the ‘before’ version because the new fabric was busier plus wanted a sleeker look, so I filled those holes with more batting too.

I fitted the back of the chair with a slipcover in stain resistant outdoor fabric by P. Kauffman that I found at Tonic Living for $10 a yard (they give a 10% discount if you use the code CENTSATIONAL).

I liked the idea of piping where the seams met, so I created enough to go around the back with the zipper foot on my sewing machine.

For a helpful step-by-step guide to piping, read this article on how to create your own cord piping.

I then stitched up a slipcover for the top of the chair, paying close attention to keeping the geometric pattern straight. Always a challenge with patterned fabric ~ you can fudge more with solids but not stripes or squares ! I pinned the piping in between the seams and sewed it all together.

For the last step, I stapled the new fabric to the bottom seat, then screwed it all back together.

Now it sits in my office, adding a fresh modern graphic pattern to this space.

There’s my new office chair, isn’t it so fun?

.

So it’s no secret I love old furniture. And thrift stores. And the paint department. The three combined bring me great joy and make my world complete.

Like so many of you, I love to fix up older pieces with stain or paint, and give them cool new hardware. You know, bring them into this century. Which is why I wander around local thrift stores and spend hours on Craigslist when I should be folding laundry. Yet again, I was out ‘shopping’ yesterday, and found a few gems I really want to bring home.

Especially when I see this sign when I walk in.

This antique dresser just needs a little love, but I’d never paint it. The burled wood is just too pretty. And a glass top too!

I can hear these end tables whisper, ‘Please paint me antique white, distress my edges, and replace my knobs with some crystal bling instead’. I may just have to heed their call, since they are only $15 each on sale.

I love the lines on this piece. It seems everyone knows someone with this style of dresser. Dark stain or light paint (cream or gray) either way, it’s lovely.

Even more beauties. Such potential!

How cool is this hall tree bench? Don’t you love that hutch! Wouldn’t it be stunning in robin’s egg blue?

Today, I’m loving this midcentury style credenza for my office to replace the ‘pretty but not storage friendly’ sofa. It’s weathered and the top is *gasp* Formica, so I see it painted in pewter gray with nickel pulls. Plus momma really needs some file cabinets. I’m kinda liking that lamp too, it’s tall and has a gorgeous shape. It would be stunning in glossy black.

And the crème-de-la-crème. Be still my heart.

I’ve spoken to several local antique stores and boutiques who are wanting to sell my pieces. Which is why I’m in the market for one of these.

Or one of these.

Just as soon as I epoxy the garage floor. And just as soon as I can convince my hub his parking spot in that same garage may become my new ‘shop’. Notice how I said his parking spot.

What’s your latest thrift store find? Got any recommendations on a professional grade sprayer? Do share!

There’s really very little reason for me to stalk the furniture department at the local thrift store since my house is already full of pieces I’ve dragged home and refinished. But I can’t stay away, much to the chagrin of my poor husband. He can’t even park in our garage because of the half dozen pieces I have yet to turn my attention to. I can’t help it ! I have some sort of addiction – a crazy soft spot in my heart for rejected objects.

Today, I couldn’t drive past the parking lot, I just had to pull in. Some people window shop high end boutiques. Me? I get my kicks exploring the furniture department at the thrift store, and dreaming of what things could become.

Like this headboard. I would pop out the four inside frames, they are a little too busy for me. Then I’d do one of two things. I’d add pretty appliqués to the four remaining sections and paint it distressed cream with a hint of the dark wood showing through in spots. Or I’d skip the appliqués and go in a different, bolder direction. Perhaps paint this baby in a semi gloss indigo shade, then attach nailhead trim to the outer framing and place it in a master bedroom up against a wallpapered accent wall and hang a bold metallic starburst mirror above. So glam !

Or this little cabinet. Someone emailed me the other day about making a wine cabinet, and this is the perfect little candidate. I would retrofit the bottom with diagonal shelving to hold wine bottles, then attach chrome hanging glass racks to the top. I’d repaint its damaged surface in black, replace the hardware with some blingy crystal knobs, then add a mirrored tray to the top. Ready for entertaining ! Trés chic.

Revamped, this skinny cabinet and hutch belongs in a cottage breakfast nook or dining room.

Look at the paneling along the back, the dentil molding on the top, and the little drawers for silverware.

Love !

I’d remove the shutter doors to create open shelving, then paint the entire piece white or a complimentary color for wherever it was destined. Perhaps paint the back a different color than the piece itself.

Or leave it the deep walnut color, the wood tone is nice too !

Some modern knobs and lined drawers, and this is a great showcase for ceramic plates or other pottery, objets d’art, or even silver platters.

This mid century piece is totally fabulous for a modern space. I might just change the hardware, but I dig the pencil legs, drawers, and mini cabinet in the middle.

This is a gorgeous sturdy dresser that would look great in a bedroom. You could leave it this walnut color and just replace the somewhat dated pulls. Or go bold and paint it – the paneling is just wonderful.

If I brought this home, my husband would first gag, then laugh, then say “What were you thinking?” Perhaps you’re doing the same. :-) First, can I get a collective ‘Eeeewwwww’ on these cushions? Amen. Now breathe. And imagine this. Toss those cushions out – the faster, the better. Then paint the frame soft green, bright turquoise, or even crisp navy blue, and replace the cushions with some Dacron wrapped foam and your choice of one of these stylish outdoor fabrics, and guess what? This would be completely wonderful on a screened porch or in a sunroom.

I love the sleek legs on this end table – it’s so perfect for magazine storage on the bottom shelf and a stylish lamp on top. Paint it silver and have a mirror made for the top – you go girl.

This sassy pair is so fabulous. I love the bamboo style detail on the wooden legs. Again, paint those legs and the tray top a high gloss black or a vivid color, then have a mirror made for the tray top, and flank your tailored sofa with them.

Now these are the kinds of pieces that stop me in my tracks. Oh my word, I love the shape of this desk. Well, it’s actually a sewing table but it’s hard to tell unless you lift the top. You could leave it a sewing table or it could easily be retrofitted into a desk. Repair the tiny break in the trim and paint it a fabulous off white or buttery cream, and it’s perfect as an office space or as a vanity in a bedroom. Spray paint the hardware dark bronze, or be brave and paint those pulls antique gold.

So there I go again, scheming what could be done with these sad little rejects on display at the thrift store. I happen to think they have so much potential. Thanks for indulging me yet again. I’m doomed with my addiction. :-)

Last week, I picked up a pair of dusty chairs at a thrift store. I loved the classic cottage shape and the cheap price, but the finish was so grungy. I brought them home and sanded them down to the raw wood, removing all the dirt and grime. Then I gave them a fresh coat of spring green paint !

Here they are Before . . .

. . . and After

All it took was half an hour of sanding and and an hour of painting to give them a fresh new look with some paint and a little distressing !

The chairs were covered in grime when I found them. Ewww.

Nothing that can’t be solved with some coarse sandpaper . . .

A fresh coat of paint from my stash – this is Dutch Boy #582-03

A little distressing along the edges with more sandpaper . . .

And that’s it ! I plan to give them a coat of Polycrylic this weekend.

I love the casual cottage look and the distressed edges !

I simply never get tired of spring green and white.

Isn’t the power of paint magically delicious ?

Welcome Spring !

Again I found myself stopping by the local St. Vincent de Paul today looking for great pieces of furniture. This thrift store can be hit and miss, but today, it was a definite hit. I was just so excited about all of these finds, I had to share. Call me strange, but scouring a thrift store on a treasure hunt just makes me giddy.

Look at these two beautiful honey tone dressers – they could be stained darker or painted. Perhaps given some new modern hardware. I visualize an asymmetrical art gallery or statement mirrors above them !

I fell in love with this chair ! If it’s still there tomorrow, I might go back for it. All it needs in new modern fabric and it would be fabulous !

I loved this table for $25 dollars. It would be the perfect candidate for Layla’s dining room table treatment. You must see her whitewashed distressed table !

Detail:

I’m not wild about knotty pine (except in rustic mountain homes), but these armoires would look amazing if given a great paint treatment. Black ? French gray blue ? They’d be statement pieces when refinished.

Oh, and yes, I sometimes do take my daughter with me. This one’s in training !

I found these great end tables . . .

Look at this perfect TV armoire ! You’d pay ten times more in a furniture store.

Okay, this sideboard stopped me in my tracks. Perfect lines. I’ve got absolutely no place to put this, but I LOVE it. A fresh paint job and some new hardware ? It would be incredible in a foyer or dining room.

This simple small desk could easily be freshened with paint and fun knobs to create a mini vanity or even an end table in a bedroom. Perhaps a subtle harlequin pattern painted on the top ?

Oh my, look at this oak china hutch. Imagine it in black, perhaps with a damask wallpaper background. That would be so sleek and modern. LOVE.

Most customers look at me strangely because I audibly gasp whenever I see pieces like this ! Such potential !

This corner end table has two great surfaces, a lower for magazines, and the top to hold a lamp.

Speaking of lamps, I always find the most interestingly shaped lamps at thrift stores. Many are junk, but every now and then you find a diamond in the rough. I happen to love both of these colored glass bases. All they need is a modern shade !

How about a little spray paint to cover the brassy metal on this one on the left. Fill the glass halfway with white sand and float some shells on top for an instant beach scene. The one on the right could stay copper, but personally I think it would look amazing in a high gloss peacock blue.

Both of these mini cabinets would make great candidates for a makeover. They’d be wonderful end tables next to a bed, but also I’d love to convert them into mini bars, with room for glassware and bar supplies inside. I imagine a beautiful tray on top corralling martini or wine glasses and beautiful glass bottles. Party perfect !

If only I had nine lives, or a shop with helpers ! How much I would LOVE to refinish each and every one of these.

_______________________________________________

In other news, I’m still struggling to get some video footage on the kitchen island paint job, so I’m putting it off to the weekend to work on it then. Hopefully early next week !

Also, if you recall all the beautiful personalized stampers available at The Paper Cafe, keep in mind with this discount code (CG15OFF) you can save 15% through March 1st !

I’ve been reflecting on my master bedroom, and its décor and I’ve concluded it’s pretty nice so far, but in need of some modern upgrades. I’m really seeking to take the bedroom to the next level. You know, add some elegant wainscoting, change up the art display, add some dramatic sconces, some upholstered seating, and perhaps a glitzy mirror above the bed. Really glam it up a with a hint of that Old Hollywood style.

Our master gets morning light, but becomes really dark in the afternoon and evening. For the longest time, I was looking for a mirrored buffet like this one from Z Gallerie to put under the front window to pull light into the space. Plus, I have a storage issue in my bedroom. I have several dozen half finished books that I’m committed to reading, so they simply cannot leave the room. And a ton of magazines piling up again. Yet all of those books and magazines were collecting dust and I really needed a storage solution for my bedtime reading material.

Enter this downtrodden substitute from the local thrift store.

A beautiful piece of cabinetry in my eyes, but sad too. I can tell that someone wanted to fix her up, but gave up. Perhaps because the top and side panels are veneer and not real wood. Or perhaps because this piece had taken a lot of abuse.

I saw so much potential here, and also a storage solution! So I paid $25 dollars at the local St. Vincent de Paul thrift and brought it home. As you know from last week’s ode to Opulence Pearl paint, I got to thinking that I could refinish the piece in a cream color, then glaze it with my new found best friend.

With my newest fixation on metallic finishes, I must tell you that I came so very close to giving it an antique silver finish. I even considered silver leafing it. But then I realized I had a bronze thing going on in the master bedroom space.

See?

As tempted as I was, I decided this cabinet refinished in silver in this space might be too Vegasy (is that a word?). So I live to silver leaf another day.

I have absolutely no use for another wood tone in this room and the existing linens are cream. Besides, I like to mix painted pieces with wood furniture. So I opted to paint it in a cream color, and give it a pearlescent glaze. Here are the three tools I used to transform: Zinsser primer, Rustoleum’s ‘Heirloom White’ latex in a can (can you believe it?) and Pratt & Lambert’s Opulence Pearl, all purchased from Orchard Supply & Hardware (OSH).

Plus some new knobs from Anthropologie.

Love !

I sanded, then primed with Zinsser.

Then I gave it two coats of Heirloom White in latex. The final third coat was a blend of one part Heirloom White to three parts Opulence Pearl, both latex paints.

Here she is After:

The existing linens in the room are a cream damask pattern. Hmmm. Then I really got to thinking. Why not play off this pattern ?

So I had a crazy clever idea. I really like this etched look on these panels, like on these pieces that I featured yesterday.

I really love this carved detail. It separates these pieces from the crowd and really makes them one of a kind.

On my piece, the inner panels of this cabinet separate from the door. So I had this paintable patterned wallpaper that I plan on using in another top secret project to be revealed whenever I get around to it.

Available at Lowes:

Excuse me, but whomever invented paintable textured wallpaper, let me kiss your ring.

I clipped off four sections, painted and glazed the wallpaper, then attached it to the removable inner panels to give it that etched panel look.

Cool, huh. Reversible panels. Two looks in one.

Seriously, they reverse with just a few tiny screws. Takes five minutes.

I had the finished edge mirror custom made to fit the top of thsi cabinet for $60 dollars. Pricey, but worth it since it pulls so much light into the room, and gives off a really beautiful reflection.

Whether it’s crystal and costume jewelry.

Here’s a peek at the pearlescent sheen up close. Keep in mind this is three parts Opulence Pearl to one part Heirloom White paint. I know it’s called ‘Heirloom White’ but it’s really a cream color in my eyes.

I thought two coats of the Opulence Pearl on top of the Heirloom White was too shiny for this piece, so I mixed the paint with the glaze to arrive at the perfect subtle pearl sheen.

Plain panels:

‘Etched’ wallpaper panels:

So which look did I settle on? I remain undecided. In truth, I like them both. One little voice says “Oh, the plain panels, they’re so elegant!” and the other voice hollers back “You wallpapered the inside panels ? You go girl !”

So as you can see, I am torn.

What say you?
