Coral + Aqua Guest Room

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014

Welcome back from the last weekend of summer! I’m always sad when summer ends, it represents the best of times and while I enjoy fall and the holidays and eagerly await spring, summer reigns supreme as my favorite season of all.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I accepted a design challenge to create a space in partnership with Del Mar fans. They sent me a gorgeous fan and the long weekend spent in Las Vegas gave me that extra day to put the finishing touches on the room.

This is the guest bedroom for the house we bought earlier this year. With the decorating I did my usual thing, combining second hand or vintage finds with stuff from flash sale sites or discount retail stores, much of it on sale or clearance. It’s a small space, only 10 x 11′ but now it’s cozy, colorful, and comfortable (see the before in this post). Here are some of the pictures I took yesterday with sources at the end.

I was inspired from the beginning by this colorful Ocean Twill fabric by P. Kaufmann. I fell in love with the sketches of ocean life filled in with watercolor hues "outside the lines" in shades of green, coral, orange, and pink. This fabric is whimsical and fun and sometimes you just need to run with something you love and let it takeover a room because it speaks to you.

I bought the window panel fabric online and paid a visit to the studio of a friend to sew the panels while I was in town – thank you Michelle! She was kind enough to sew the large Ikat pillow covers for me from her collection of amazing fabrics.

On both sides of the bed are twin chests topped with tall aqua glass lamps and a few amenities.

The space is all about comfort and color and I love it and can’t wait to share it with friends and family!

Guest Room: Finishing Touches

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

My oldest girl is home for the summer and we’re loving her company. She comes and goes like any 21 year old, popping in to say hello before she’s off to a class or a get together with friends. Her younger sibs play rock-paper-scissors in the evening for the chance to snuggle with her in her bed at night, it’s a cute evening ritual. She’s returning to college in San Diego in the fall, but completing some classes while she’s home and it’s so great having the whole family together even if just for this short season.

Her room is also the guest room while she’s away, and we’ve both wanted to upgrade it from how it looked when she was in high school to make it more sophisticated. New linens and accessories now complete the space she calls home when she’s home.

I bought a pretty gold leaf accent table at Overstocks for her nightstand that’s a replica of a high end World’s Away version, Reichel even featured it on her blog a few weeks ago. The dark raspberry pink lamp is from Lamps Plus and the navy upholstered bed is from Joss & Main.

The duvet and shams are Pottery Barn’s Calista Floral pattern, purchased on sale. I also bought Kerry Cassill’s indigo pillowcases and a seaglass watercolor pillowcase (I sewed a pillow cover using this envelope pillowcase tutorial.)
