I love the rug. Where can I find it?  ~ Maria, Beth & Brenda

I do too, it’s my favorite accent in the room.  The cotton rug adds both a boyish stripe and a coastal feel.  The rug is the 6’ x 9’ Woven Caravan Stripe by Dash & Albert.

Boy’s Room Tour

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

I’ve been falling asleep in this space for a few nights, I just can’t help it!  I find snuggling up with my little guy in this room late at night completely irresistible.  It’s here where I learn all his secrets, his battle plans, and if I listen carefully, the location of buried treasure.  It seems everyone in our house has been spending more hours in this room lately, especially the resident to whom it belongs, our five year old son.

Last year we said goodbye to the soft blue nursery walls, and upgraded to a more mature, more intense teal blue, and the completion of the board and batten treatment last week enhances the color even more.  I wanted it to be a bright clean happy place, one where he could adventure and explore.  A room where he could not only display everything he loves right this very moment, but one that would also adapt to his changing interests over time.

Want the grand tour of our boy’s room?   Come on in!

Color Splash: Painted Cabinet

Friday, August 27th, 2010

I’m making my way around my four year old boy’s room, slooooowly attempting to spruce it up and give it some real style.   One day when it’s all done, I’ll show you the blah before and you’ll see just how drab it was.  His room, like all kids rooms, was in serious, and I mean serious, need of storage ~  I was stepping on all those Legos in the middle of the night.  For four, he’s usually pretty good at putting those toys away, but since he had no real storage, I really couldn’t get too upset.  But something had to be done !

Yet again, I shopped my house for the perfect solution.  We had a tall tower made up of stackable cabinets (purchased here five years ago) that used to sit in the playroom, but since I now want to find a desk in there for homework and art projects, I decided to repurpose these honey wood cabinets for the lad’s room instead.

Their size couldn’t be more perfect ~ they now sit right next to his closet on a narrow patch of wall space.  Problem ?   They were all scuffed up and I couldn’t visualize the the honey stain look in his room.  And if I don’t get to paint something at least once a month, I start to twitch.

Some primer, paint, and crown molding transformed these cabinets in a weekend, and gave his room the splash of color it needed, plus the tower provides fantastic storage for all those toys, books, and collected treasures.

fantastic feature button coral font

Time for another Fantastic Feature, today it’s Cassie from Hi Sugarplum

As you know, I’m in the middle of decorating my boy’s room, so Cassie’s spruced up space couldn’t be better timed!  I do love an inspiring makeover done on a budget !

Cassie writes:

“It seems like only yesterday I was decorating my son’s nursery, but now he’s nine, so it was time to kiss the ‘sweetness’ good-bye.   While he was visiting his grandparents for two weeks, we surprised him with a room makeover suitable for a big guy.  And the best part is, by using items from our house, updating his existing stuff, and shopping smart….the total bill for the room came to under $300!

Don’t you love the bold orange and brown stripes behind the bed?  That’s a ‘wow factor’ indeed !  Cassie revamped her boy’s dresser (read all about it here), recovered corkboards in burlap and a map, and made curtains out of drop cloths ~ this room is perfect for a nine year old boy.   Bravo Cassie !   The full story of the transformation can be read over at Cassie’s blog Hi Sugarplum, plus don’t miss the expression on her son’s face at the reveal !  PRICELESS !!

Coming up next, the winners of the last two giveaways will be announced, plus one reader’s question will be answered, so stay tuned !!

Boy’s Room: Progress Report

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

valspar paint Thank goodness my boy is a patient little fellow when it comes to the makeover in his room – cause good golly, I’ve sure been dragging my feet on this one.

Actually, being four, I’m not sure the critter is really aware of what’s going on, he’s just happy to have his toys scattered all around the room, much to the dismay of my toes when I step on mini Lego guys in the middle of the night – aaargh!   We’re working on that ‘clean up your toys before bed’ thing.

Anyway, we’ve managed to paint the room and closet doors a completely fantastic shade of slate blue with just a hint of turquoise called ‘La Fonda Villa Fountain’ by Valspar.   And last month, I revamped a chalkboard table and chairs for him, but then the makeover came to a halt as I ran into a design dilemma with wall decor and lighting.

But yesterday, I was inspired again !  I was returning a mistake fixture to a Lamps Plus store, and as I meandered through the shop, I spotted the perfect light fixture for his room  – crisp, white, and modern !  So I ordered the fixture right there on the spot, and as soon as it arrives, will enlist the hub to help me install it.

I’m also awaiting this rug from Dash & Albert – I love its calming yet beachy blues and greens.  I’m simply smitten with this Annie Selke fabric – I’m thinking pillows, and perhaps a border along his white window panels.   Some ‘North Beach’ Nautica pillows from BCF, and this organic Cortland coverlet from Company Store also complete the slate blue/white/apple green medley.
