Sea what I mean?  What’s your latest color crush?

I adore this color so much I even use a version of it as a background on the ol’ blog. It’s that blueish with a bit of green and gray shade that in my opinion just makes the world a better place. It’s not turquoise or aqua, but not pastel or too green either.  Kind of airy and watery but not as bright as Tiffany blue, and always so so pretty when done right. I’m a total sucker for anything painted robin’s egg blue.

I have a bunch of fan decks that I keep on hand and I do believe it may be a real sickness because not only do I prize my collection of fan decks but I also collect paint swatches everywhere I go, especially in shades of blue and green, being my favorites and all. I can’t help it. So I picked up a few more samples from brands I didn’t have around town on Saturday and then started to narrow it down.

I obsess over choosing the right paint color and I can always use a second opinion so Coco got in on the action.  “This one… no this one… “

Here I thought she’d be helpful but she really is so fickle. I’m not sure she’ll make a great decorator, despite being born with perfect stripes. *sigh*

Over coffee on Sunday I started to whittle down my favorites and yes it’s true, I wholeheartedly admit comparing paint swatches is my idea of a really good time.  

These were all gorgeous, but a little too saturated and closer to Tiffany Blue.

Then I regrouped and started narrowing down some favorites, eliminating ones that were too green…

And then finally narrowed it down to these five favorites:

“I would like some advice on some pieces of furniture for my bedroom. I am new at this and really don’t know where to start.  For my bedroom I’d love some color mixed with black, grey, and white.  I want to mix in new pieces of furniture (like a headboard) with old/repainted night stands and an old chest.  What color do you think I should paint them?  Should I brush paint or spray paint? Any thoughts or ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.”  ~ Mina

The answer is completely subjective and depends on so many factors, your favorite colors, the space itself, and of course the style of the piece of furniture. I like to think of it this way.  If you’re looking for a piece that will harmonize with other players in the room then choose a classic or more neutral color, like cream, gray, or black, and then pull color into the space with your wall paint, textiles, and accessories.  But if you’re looking for a showstopper, or one that will be a focal point and be more dominant in the space, then by all means, choose a brighter color.

There’s a great source of inspiration for painted furniture and a site I absolutely love. I wrote about Somerset Bay two years ago, and I find their entire collection so inspiring, every color is spot on.

Finally Mina, there are three basic ways for you to paint those endtables and/or that bedroom chest. You can brush paint, spray paint, or use Annie Sloan chalk paint, all three yield beautiful results.  New hardware or knobs is another way to add color and personality too, so enjoy the creative process of transforming your piece!

Today Courtney from Courtney Out Loud is back with his monthly contribution and the topic of the day is decorating with wood antiques, specifically those vintage pieces handed down from previous generations. Please welcome back Courtney and his artful analysis on how to decorate with antique wood furniture:

“Mixing antique and modern furniture styles helps create an individualized and multilayered room that reflects the owner’s unique taste and personality. However, many people adhere to one specific style when decorating their homes. This approach is great if you are truly passionate about a particular era or genre of design, however, for the majority of homeowners they tend to be at a loss when they happen to inherit a family heirloom. How do you incorporate it into your home’s personality and style?  Case in point, Kate received this email from a reader seeking help:  

"My mom has a vintage buffet that I convinced her to hang onto. I want to use it in my home, but how do you incorporate vintage pieces with your regular decor, without making it feel like grandma’s house?"

Great question! Exactly how do you incorporate vintage and antique furniture into your home without having it feel too dated ?  Don’t fret because it’s as easy as following one of these six simple rules.

1) Determine Your Design Focus  A room filled with nothing but antiques can quickly make your home feel dated and more like a museum.  Unless you are purposefully going for a "boho" look, then you need to decide the primary style of your space – modern, traditional, contemporary – whatever it may be. Making the decision on what style will dominate the room will allow you to make conscious choices on what types of antiques will work with your aesthetic.  You can then begin to layer in vintage and antique pieces that suit your particular design focus and also add character.

The two rooms above are perfect examples of how to choose a design focus yet still incorporate antiques and vintage pieces seamless into a room without overpowering the space.  The antiques are combined with more modern pieces to achieve a balanced “collected over time” look. 

      

2) Put Antiques To Work  Most of us have visited a house where there was a room designated "Do Not Enter" or worse, the furniture was slipcovered in plastic.  Antiques were originally made with a purpose, so put them to work.  Have a beautiful antique dining table set?  Break it up.  Pair the table with modern, industrial, or upholstered chairs then use the matching chairs in another part of your house, say as part of a reading room vignette.  By using these family heirlooms as functional pieces throughout your home, you breathe new life into them and into the rooms where they reside.

3) There is Harmony in Discord.  Filling a room with antiques or vintage pieces simply because they are so is a road map straight to "Granny’s House". The impact of the pieces will be lost, so I suggest that you look for "harmonic discordance".  It’s a term borrowed from music, but by definition it’s when a composer purposefully uses off notes to emphasize a particular section of music. Using your inherited antique pieces to create visual dissonance is a fantastic way to break up the monotony that may arise from using one style in a room but also serves to highlight the fantastic qualities of the antique piece itself.

These images exemplify the visual tension that can be created by pairing dissimilar pieces. Left alone, the pieces are fine but when combined with modern accessories, they make for real visual interest within the rooms.

     

4) Create a Space For It  This is a trick that merchandise stylists have used for years and has been appropriated by interior designers to work difficult furniture pieces into a room. Quite simply, create a "backdrop" for the antique or vintage piece you are trying to fit into the room. Paint large squares of color on a blank wall and use them to frame the piece, or anchor a corner of a room with a large period inspired painting or mirror and float the piece of furniture in front.  Consider as part of your plan an unexpected place for your antique.   Doing so allows the vintage piece to become a purposeful focal point and less of an afterthought.

5) Tell A Story.  Sometimes a connection between your antique pieces and the rest of your decor is not obvious. That is when you use accessories (pictures, lamps, mirrors and art) to create a subtle relationship with the rest of the room.  Setting a pair of modern crystal lamps on top of a burled wood credenza or using a vintage console to house your family photo collection are great ways to create unifying themes to the rest of the room.

In addition to accessories, look to the innate aspects of the antique or vintage piece such as wood tone, leg shape, or finishes to echo other design elements in the room.

6) Let It Go   So you’ve made serious efforts but you simply don’t have the space for Great Aunt Sally’s piano or your Mother’s hope chest. Trying to shoe horn the piece in your home is a sure way to end up disliking it down the road. If a piece doesn’t fit, consider giving it away to a sibling or family member, donating it to a museum, or parting with it by selling to an antique shop. 

When I am dealing with clients who are having a hard time parting with a piece, I ask what is it about the piece that they love. Most times it is the memories associated with the piece, not the actual item itself. Remember, those memories are something you will own forever whether the piece is in your house or not. Whenever possible, I like to take an artistic picture of the piece as a keepsake for the client and have them create a scrapbook page that includes other relevant artifacts so they can retain some tangible aspect of the piece.

You are not your Grandmother, so stop worrying about decorating like her! Know that by choosing to mix antiques into your decor, you are creating a definite sense of place, history, and warmth in your home. Decorating with antiques and vintage pieces of one of the easiest ways to imbue your home with a sense of self and character. By remembering to edit your vintage pieces and juxtapose your antiques to the modern elements within your home, you will create a look that few will dare to compare to your Grandmother!

I’ve never shown you our floor plan before, here it is. I dug this up out of some old documents from 6 years ago.  You can see where our rooms all sit in relation to each other. We have a 2 ½ garage, meaning there are two spots for our cars, and a space to the right for extra stuff.  My latest idea is to take over part of our garage to construct  a mudroom.

Are ya ready to see what the garage looks like now?  Trust me, it’s completely uninspiring.

See what I mean?  Yes, that’s the corner of my garage.  That’s where I store my tools and paint supplies, etc.  No comment on the mister’s boxing heavy bag, ahem.   

And as you can see, I am not using this space to its maximum potential.  No it isn’t pretty, but I haven’t been one to complain in years past.  We have a decent workbench and a little wine storage cabinet, what more do you need in life?  

But I do, oh I do. 

I have a mudroom on my mind, one that will go here:

Now that the kids are growing up and playing a lot of sports, I have no place to store all the gear so I really do want to transform this space into a functioning mudroom.  It’s been on my mind for many months now. In my head, I’m transforming this corner of my garage to work much better for the family.

I have visions dancing around in my head of a place to store bulk items and kid gear.  Hardwood floors! Tongue & groove paneling! Built in benches and cubbies! Amen.  Plus if I refashion the workbench, I’ll still have a place to putter around on projects and a place for the tool chest too. 

I’ll need to frame up some walls and the cost of all of my ideas will add up fast, so I entered my mudroom idea in the Arrow Fastener Dream Room Contest – they’re offering someone a chance to win a $10,000 makeover, so I say count me IN.  Cause I could build myself one heck of a mudroom with that kind of cash.

When I look at what makes a neutral space successful, it’s the combination of several design elements. With a neutral palette, the visual interest comes from the shapes of the decorative objects chosen, the contrast between light and dark, the addition of warm wood tones, the addition of metals or metallic sheens, and the layering of pattern and texture. 

I find a neutral bedroom to be soothing and restful.  Below is one of my most favorite bedrooms where several different patterns are present.  Beyond the linen headboard, you’ll see a matelassé coverlet, herringbone throw, damask drapes and a textured accent pillow combined with classic French style furnishings.

Beckie from Washington sent me this email with a great question about what to do with decorative centerpieces when you’re serving guests a meal:

“Hey Kate. This is one of those questions that I think a lot of people (ok me) have always wondered how to do gracefully but seem too afraid to ask. Real life just doesn’t work the way you see it in a magazine, so here goes.

You go to all the trouble and creativity to set a beautiful table for a special occasion, you set up a nice well thought out centerpiece and you bring out your best dishes and set up the place settings and your nice stemware and everything looks perfect . . . You’ve cooked your meal and now everyone is sitting at the table ready and waiting with baited breath, but wait… there is nowhere to put the food as you have filled your table with beautiful things. How do you deal with that?

Do you set up a buffet?  Remove the centerpiece? Fill each plate and serve each person like a waiter? Am I the only one who doesn’t know how to do this right? Awaiting you answer for the holiday season.  ~ Beckie”

Hey Beckie, great question! I don’t believe there is any one way to “do it right”. There are several ways to work around your table decorations during a meal, it just depends on your preferred method of serving guests.

When it comes to how to serve your meal and where to put the food, you have a few options. You can clear your centerpiece and make room for the food on the table, family style. You can set up a location for the food elsewhere such as a sideboard, and serve buffet style. Or you can choose the formality of serving your guests on a plate one by one. 

Personally, I believe in keeping holiday entertaining with a meal as simple and casual as possible. I find that’s far more welcoming approach than elaborate rituals, but that’s me. What to do with a seasonal centerpiece doesn’t have to be complicated at all with some simple planning ahead. As long as you decide how you’re going to serve the food in advance, the style of your table decor can follow your lead. 

Here are a few tips for planning your centerpiece around the meal:

1.  Keep it Simple and Low.  The easiest way to set a seasonal table for a meal is to keep your décor simple and your arrangements low. In fall, scatter some seasonal pumpkins or gourds, a few votive candles or small hurricanes, and/or some petite floral arrangements in between. These smaller items can be moved to the side to make room for plates or platters on the table when the meal is served.

2.  Make A (Moveable) Statement.  If you’re in the mood to make a statement with your centerpiece, choose something large scale, or layer a collection of seasonal items.

However, if you’re planning on using your table for placement of food, it’s essential that your statement centerpiece be easily movable to make room for platters, and also to allow for conversation among guests.

When guests sit down to eat, keep in mind their line of sight across the table. Any centerpiece that fills the air space between 8” and 24” above the table impedes your guests ability to see and speak to one another. These vases and branches below make a stunning centerpiece, but they will get in the way of comfortable conversation, so in my house, they’d be moved off the table during the meal.

A single tree branch like this one is less likely to interfere with placement of plates and guests ability to talk to one another, so it is perfectly fine left on the table.

3.  Strategize with a Sideboard.  Whether your dining space is formal or casual, having a sideboard or buffet makes food service much easier. Platters and warming trays can keep the meal close by and allow more room for decorative displays to remain on a table.

Don’t have a sideboard?  Use your kitchen counters or island as a buffet for your meal instead.  Even a folding table covered in a tablecloth acts as a temporary buffet when entertaining guests.

4.  Fahgetaboutit.  Preparing a meal for guests can bring its own anxiety, so who says you have to fuss about a table centerpiece at all?  Consider skipping the table entirely and choose a different location for your seasonal show.

Layer your holiday decor in other areas of your home, whether on your mantel or on a side table, and don’t worry about additional accessorizing on the table. Choose instead some nice dishes and cloth napkins and a few candles and call it a day. 

The most important thing when serving guests a meal is the company shared. Beautiful table décor is a wonderful way to celebrate the season, but it should take a back seat to the food that is prepared and the warmth of the friends and family around the table.

What’s the secret to a well dressed bed you might ask?  I thought I’d ask an expert for her best tips.  I’ve been a fan of Annette Tatum’s style for years, and I completely love her line of sophisticated and soft patterns for both adults and kids.  I asked Annette to offer up some suggestions for a well dressed bed, and she was kind enough to share her secrets!  (I added the inspirational images along the way to illustrate.)

1. Think in Layers 

“I am a big fan of layering solids and prints on a bed.  I also like to have a basic white always on hand as well as an assortment of prints that I can mix in depending upon the season.

2. Always Consider Personal Comfort 

I usually have two duvets on my bed.  Mine is a California King so I have my king size duvet and then fold another twin size at the bottom.  That way if one person is cold, the other person does not have to be hot.

3. Pillow Talk

For a King bed, I have three Euros, two King pillows and two standard pillows, for a Queen bed, I use three Euros, two standard size pillows, and a decorative pillow, and for a Twin bed, one Euro sham and one Standard pillow.

4.  Skirt or no Skirt? 

As far as a "skirt or duster" for the bed, I am in favor of both options, it’s a personal choice.  There are so many different beds on the market it really depends on your style.

5.  Pattern Play

The rules I use for pattern on the bed are as follows, regardless of the size of the bed.

A.  Starting from the bottom, choose your duster.  Usually it’s a solid in heavier fabric such as linen or else a striped pattern to add length and height to the "look" of the bed.  I recommend tailored duster for a more clean look or a ruffled for a more romantic look.

B.  Duvet.   This is usually a solid or else an overall large print.  Something that is not going to take over the room, is simple, and can be easily incorporated with other patterns.  Large cabbage roses, simple Indian motifs, and classic couture brocade patterns are a great starting point for a bed.

C. Euro shams (measuring 26” x 26”) are always a good size. Some small detail edge such as a flange or small ruffle adds texture. Since these are not the pillows you sleep on, they can be more decorative.

D.  Whether a king or standard sham, here I layer small to medium patterns on the bed.  Since these are the "sleeping" pillows I also keep an extra set of cases (and often on a King bed an extra pillow) that is "my favorite" which I tuck away behind the Euro shams when the bed is made.  Sometimes the "sleeping pillows" are often the most used or "loved" so they might not need to be on display.

E. Decorative bolsters or small accent pillows. These are the ‘wild cards" on the bed, and the one of a kind element that can be added to the bed for fun. They can be layered on top of the other pillows in the "front" of the bed for depth and color.

F.  Throw blankets.  Layering a throw at the end of the bed is another great way to ‘ground’ the patterns  and add a pretty accent to the foot of your bed.

G.  Sheets: I love nice sheets and there are so many on the market that have fun with not only white but a set in a small complimentary print or another accent color. 

Either way "making your bed" can be just as fun as fashion.  With all the great options in print and color you can now make your bed "fashionable".   Sleeping does not have to be so serious anymore, so create the bed of your dreams!”
