Billy in the Bedroom

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Billy is so my boyfriend. Billy and me, we got a thing going on. But whenever Billy arrives at my door, I still find he is too ordinary, too plain, unacceptable in his current state. I find it necessary to improve him and refine him so that he is oh so much better.

I’m a fan of the IKEA Billy bookcase having used him to make built-ins in 2011, created some shelving in this awesome playroom, sidled him up next to a Besta in my office, and for the fourth time we’ve again partnered together. Now, two Billys flank the French doors in the guest room (also our oldest daughter’s room when she’s home from college) but this time they’ve been beefed up a bit so there a hiiiiint  more stylish.

I used the basic 11” inch deep Billy with the extension on top for added height. We mimicked some things we’d done in the past, adding crown like with this set of Billys and baseboard like with these Billys and thicker trim like with these custom built-ins in our family room to make the shelves appear thicker and more substantial.

Guest Bedroom Plans + Bench Makeover

Monday, June 24th, 2013

It was a busy DIY weekend around here, we finished up the tongue and groove wall in my friend’s dining room on Saturday (which I’ll share next week), assembled and painted a set of bookcases, and I also finished a bench makeover I’ve been meaning to get to for a few weeks.

I’m upgrading the guest room that also serves as our oldest daughter’s room when she’s home from college during the holidays and summer months. I’m making a few changes to the previous more youthful turquoise palette and changing it up with sophisticated combo of cool navy and raspberry with touches of warm brass.

I love a bench at the end of the bed for extra seating, or as a place to toss clothing or set down an overnight bag. I found the perfect size bench with curved detail on Joss & Main a month ago and purchased it with every intention of changing it to make it fit the space, which is what I did.

Aloha Inspired Appliqué Pillow

Monday, May 20th, 2013

It was one of those weekends devoted entirely to family which was a good thing. We attended a birthday party for Matt’s Aunt’s 90th birthday, and it was a family reunion with everyone traveling far distances to celebrate. Seeing loved ones you haven’t seen in a long time is a reminder of how time marches on far so fast. The kids grow older so quickly, and we’re all getting older too, and it makes you realize how each days really is a precious gift.

I started clearing out closets on Sunday, minimizing clutter in my quest for a home that is simple and meaningful, and then spied a project I started a few weeks ago so I finished it.  When we visited Hawaii in March I was inspired by the motifs I saw in the traditional Hawaiian quilts that date back to the early 1800s, a technique brought over by missionaries. Funny, in previous years I’ve never been drawn to them but something about the intricate and handcrafted nature spoke to me on this recent visit.

I came up with an aloha inspired appliqué pillow cover, one that adds a dose of watery aqua blue for summer and also adds a touch of the islands I miss so much.

In Oahu, I visited the Polynesian Cultural Center and spent half an hour chatting with the Sisters. This quilt was on the wall was so impressive, that green pattern is cut from one single piece of cotton cloth and sewn by hand. Incredible.

You spy these patterns all over Hawaii in shops and hotels, I love the unique designs that repeat around a central point.
