Inspired by the Blossoms

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

One of the things I love about seasons are those moments when they reveal themselves.  Like when the leaves turn in fall, or when that first snow falls in winter.  Sure, winter is magical during the holidays, and even through January.  Then comes that longing for warmer weather, so we wait and wait for the deciduous trees to come back to life and show us a sign that spring is near.

Well looky loo, look at you, so nice to see you again.

Spring is still technically several weeks away, but the first way it reveals itself around here is when the cherry and plum trees blossom.  You’re driving around, still wearing your winter clothes, bemoaning the dreariness, thinking you just can’t take it anymore.  Then all of a sudden, there’s a sea of pink blossoms around town in late February and it’s spectacular.

I’m not the only one to stop and smell them, I spy my neighbors pausing to appreciate them too.  I’m sure you must stop and smell them too when they bloom in your state.

Cherry and plum tree blossoms are one of my most favorite shows in nature, but unfortunately there’s a big storm headed our way, which means we will lose most of the blooms.  No fair spring, you’re such a tease.

Sweetheart Tray

Monday, February 14th, 2011

My honey and I aren’t big on lavish expenditures on Valentine’s Day.  Usually, we spend it at home with just a few decadent treats like dark chocolate and champagne ~ a thoughtful card with a sweet sentiment is always exchanged.

For the longest time, I’ve been wanting to craft something with the sheet music from our wedding song, but couldn’t decide what to do.  A card?  A picture frame mat?  Then it came to me a few days ago!  How about something sentimental we could actually use?  A decoupage tray!

Garden Craft: Recycled Bottle Birdfeeder

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

My kids have been asking me to make them a birdfeeder all winter long.  I’ve been seeing an extraordinary amount of begging eyes and hearing a whole lot of “Momma, can we pweease feeeeed da biwds, like Mawy Poppins, day aw so hungawy, pweeease?”  I simply couldn’t take the pressure any more, those munchkins have a way of wearin’ me down.

So yesterday we finished up a fun project together ~ we made a birdfeeder out of a recycled bottle and a few other supplies.  I say “we” but actually, I’m only choosing to remember it as “we” when it was more me doing all the work and them taking all the credit when Dad came home.

I had an empty plastic liter bottle and I noticed it fit perfectly inside two Ball jar lids, so that was the original *work with what ya got* concept.  A few supplies from the craft and hardware store, and we were in business.

Simple & Last Second

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Hello hello!  What are you up to these days?  Around these parts there’s some last second decorating going on, getting ready for our holiday gathering on Saturday.

I’m like a moth to a flame when it comes to sparkle at Christmastime.  Call me a Pollyanna, but I’m also fond of draping sparkly beads where light will catch them, so I made this simple whimsical beaded garland yesterday.

Oh yes, of course you can find all sorts of beaded garland everywhere, but I had the supplies on hand in my box of leftover crafty stuff, and I just didn’t feel like changing out of my pajamas.  I made this one to fit the kitchen chandy out of jewelry beads, flat glass marbles, hot glue, and some fishing line.
