Every now and then I get an email from a reader that makes for a great post, so rather than a quick email response, I like to answer them here from time to time. Like this recent question from Jaime:
“Hey Kate! We’ve been living in our first house for almost a year with mostly leftover furniture from our college days and everything is sooo beige and brown, including our sofa and walls. I’m really tired of it being so boring, and I’m craving color, but nothing too crazy. I like neutrals, they feel safe to me, but I’m wondering how to bring some color to our home. I’m a little afraid of picking something and then hating it. I’m really not sure where to start. Could you help, maybe offer a few tips?” ~ Jaime
Hey Jaime, great question! I know there are so many people out there who love the idea of color, but tend to play it safe with neutrals. Having a neutral base in shades of gray, taupe, cream, white, or brown will stand the test of time, and also allow you to experiment with color in different ways.
First, when thinking about color, my best advice to you is to ask yourself how you want to feel when you enter your home. Color is so closely tied to emotion. Do you want to feel energized, stimulated, and inspired? Then you’ll likely be looking for bold vibrant colors. Do you want to be soothed and nurtured? You are probably more drawn to muted tranquil tones. Asking yourself how you want to feel is an important first question when looking for ways to bring color into your home.
Ideal Home
Next, find your inspiration. Your source for choosing color can come from absolutely anything, whether it’s a fabric, a favorite flower, collectible, piece of art, a favorite article of clothing or scarf, or even something more intangible like a favorite vacation destination. Perhaps you love the colors of the sea, or the vibrant hues of a sunset? The opalescent tones in an abalone shell? The intensity of a magenta orchid? The deep red skin of a ripe heirloom tomato? Nature is always a great source of inspiration. Choose something in your home that you love, or look to nature. Find something that makes you feel good when you look at it, that’s your best cue.
Once you’ve decided how you want to feel, and what specific things inspire you, then it’s easy to choose a favorite color or colors, and you build from there. Now that you’ve picked your inspiration color or colors, here are a few ways to incorporate them into your home.

I often get that question, “Hey Kate, are your kids’ rooms always as organized as they appear?” and I have to smile. In truth, I find it completely impossible to keep kids’s rooms clean and organized all of the time. Most days you can barely see the floor because my two little monkeys have managed to pull everything out. They’re kids, they do what kids do best. They eat, they play, the sleep. And in between, they make a whole lotta messes.
I have a few tactics I use, but to answer the big question on how to best keep kids’ spaces organized, I invited my good friend Cristin from Simplified Bee to offer a few tips. Cristin is a busy mom of two girls, and a professional organizer too. She’s a real pro when it comes to this topic.

.
So Cristin, tell us all your secrets. What are the best ways to keep those kid spaces clean and organized?
“Keeping kids’ rooms organized is a challenge for most parents. How many of us have cleaned our child’s room only to find it turned upside down in minutes. And if you have a collector {dolls, rocks or toy cars} it can be especially painful to keep the space neat. Here are some helpful tips to help organize kids’ rooms:

Greetings! I had a fun time with a lot of great gals this past week, but thankfully I’m on a plane flying back to California today. I miss my family. I miss my broken in pillow with its perfect fill that never gives me a kink in the neck. Mostly, I miss my paint splattered sweat pants from 1995, proudly worn here.
There’s just no place like home!
Terri asked a great question yesterday on my Facebook page:

.
Terri, I get a little nervous when my paint supplies dwindle so I keep several types of primer, paint and protectant around at all times.
1) I always have oil based primer on hand, especially for laminate surfaces like floating wall shelves or for covering wood like this oak mantel. No sanding required! Spray paint formulas are faster, but thinner in coverage. I like brush on formulas for surfaces that will get a lot of wear and tear. If you’re bored or curious, awhile back, I wrote up a few tips on refinishing with oil based primer and paint.

Melanie from Washington recently wrote this to me:
“Hey Kate, I read that when you remodeled your house a few years ago, that you designed and built your kitchen. We’re in the beginning stages of gutting our very dated kitchen and we’re starting over from scratch! We’re so excited!! My question for you is, were there any pitfalls you ran into? Anything you learned along the way you’d be willing to share? What should we know about building a kitchen starting from four bare walls? Help!”
Great question Melanie! Me and my Mister built our kitchen over five years ago, so to answer Melanie’s question, I had to dig through the archives and pull out all my files to refresh my recollection of the process of building our kitchen from scratch. It resulted in a mild rash and minor heart palpitations, but I’ve since recovered.
No, I’m kidding. I absolutely love kitchen design, and loved the entire process of choosing all the details of the one in our own home. I’m one of those people that if I overheard at the grocery store you were building a new kitchen, I’d butt my ponytail right into the conversation and want to chat all about appliances, countertops and the exact style of door front you’re choosing for your cabinets. “Really? Oh, fabulous!”
Building a kitchen from scratch is an enormous task. Unlike throwing the latest most popular shade of paint on your walls, a kitchen must be a space that can stand the test of time. My kitchen suits the style of my home, and also my own personal tastes as well. While there are a few things I wish I’d done differently, for the most part, I really love the floor plan and finishes we continue to live with every day.
Ten Lessons Learned from Building Our Kitchen
