Dresser Do Over + O’verlays Giveaway

By Kate Riley April 7, 2015

My stepdaughter moved in with us while she is taking a year off and working before continuing her education. She lives in the little studio above our garage so she has the best of both worlds, a place to call her own and her family close by. She traveled to South America for a few months but since she returned home in December, we’ve been fixing up the studio to suit her style using most of the pieces from her navy and coral bedroom I pulled together for her when she was in college.

She was in need of a small dresser that also served as a nightstand so I painted over this IKEA Koppang chest turned bone inlay lookalike from last year (she found the pattern too busy for her taste and hey it’s just paint!) My girl loves navy and white with coral or pink so I worked with that palette again. I lightly sanded the dresser and gave it a few extra thin coats of Glidden’s ‘Rich Navy’ which formed the base of the original chest makeover from last year.

I used the DeeDee O’verlays fretwork panels for this dresser, just enough to give the drawers a little contrast and curvy detail. I’ve used these panels before (see this dresser update) as have many bloggers, they are a fabulous way to get a high end look for less!

O’verlays are so easy to apply, I use cotton swabs and Liquid Nails to apply them to the surface of the drawers (make sure the paint has cured for at least 24 hours and is completely dry). This O’verlay pattern partnered with nickel ring pulls purchased at MyKnobs.com mimics the style of the iconic Dorothy Draper Espana chest.

The navy Greek key trim is from M&J Trimmings, I sewed it on the edge of a plain white curtain. The lamp is one of two raspberry gourd lamps I bought from Lamps Plus (the twin is in the upstairs guest room). The blue accent pillows I made from a single Target curtain panel, the brushstroke accent pillow is my own design. The white mirrored tray is Nate Berkus from Target, the inlay chevron frame was purchased at Anthropologie a few years ago.

  1. What a great little dresser/night stand! I love the combo of navy, white, and coral. It looks fresh and young. I clicked on over to the overlays web site and there are so many great ones to choose from! I love them all. But, if I had to pick one for the project I am working on right now, I would go with the Bubbles overlay. I am designing my 3 year old son’s room and I think a night stand painted in Kelly Green with the Bubbles overlay would bring a fun and playful look to his room. Everything you do looks so clean and crisp. I just love your style.

The Gracie and Natalie inlays pique my interest, but Diamond and DeeDee are lovely as well!

  93. Pippa is my favorite! So chic…I used it to upgrade a $35 dresser and get compliments from every guest who comes over! I keep post-it notes in the top drawer so I can write down the website for them. :) I’m a new-ish DIYer on a serious budget and now I have pieces I can be proud of!

  116. Cheryle looks interesting. Love how a simple overlay can really dress up a dresser.

  117. I really like the “Bubbles” overlay. I have an old old dresser that I guess I thought I would someday restain and revarnish. But, aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, that’s not going to happen. I love O’verlays Hemne Anne pattern. Would love to use it in my guest bedroom on my IKEA dresser.Such a cool idea! I love their website.

  125. Oh the DeeDee I like so very much for its simple and classic lines. Plus my youngest sister’s name is Karen but her nickname is Dee Dee!

  126. Coral. Yeah, I’m probably the only one. But it’s like a pop of Champagne bubbles!

  127. I just love the Anne and the Dee Dee. The Overlays are just genius and do so much to really make a piece of furniture special.

  128. What a great way to makeover an otherwise plain piece of furniture! My favorite would probably have to be the Pippa Single.

  129. I love the Fiona and the Anne for the 5 drawer Tarva and the Greek Key Double.

  130. I love the Harper profile. It mimics the four square tile I used in the bathroom. My plan is to use an old chest for a a vanity in my bedroom and think that overlay would really dress that chest up. Thanks for the chance to a win.

  131. I would like to pick up the Ikea Rast (pine nightstand) and paint it and use the DeeDee overlay.
