Pretty Plantation Shutters + Giveaway

By Kate Riley November 11, 2014

*This post is a partnership with Smith & Noble window treatments.

I’m headed home to California today after a long work weekend, whew! We had the kitchen floor tile patched in preparation for kitchen cabinets and I’m almost finished with the master bedroom. I’ll share more about those in progress spaces in a few weeks.

One of the most exciting upgrades that happened over the weekend was the installation of the plantation shutters in two rooms. I’d planned on using them in the home but was putting it off until next year but then Smith and Noble contacted me with an offer I couldn’t refuse… the opportunity to work with their Holiday Guarantee window treatment campaign. I ordered custom sheer roman shades for our entry many years ago from Smith and Noble so I was excited to work with their products again. “Let’s do this!” I replied and some shutter samples arrived in the mail a few days later.

There were size, color, and material options, my final choice was the 2 ½” Durawood in White so I measured my windows and sent along this image of the space from last month to their Inside Design Consultant. No window is ever straight (of course) but to solve that problem Smith and Noble uses a trim kit with shims so the shutters will fit precisely.

This is the first room you see when you walk in the front door, but one thing we hated about it was the “view” from the front door of the pool equipment and air conditioner from the window. Really?  Don’t get me started on whoever decided to put it there blocking the view of the pool in the backyard instead of placing the equipment on the side of the house. We debated moving it all and got a quote from a few specialists but ugh it was so expensive so it had to stay put.

Plantation shutters were the perfect solution for this living room because they block that unsightly pool equipment and A/C unit, plus the filtered natural light is sooooo nice in this space.

Simple and elegant, they make such a great first impression. I LOVE the simplicity of the clean lines and classic style of white shutters. (Find the details on the furnishings from yesterday’s post).

We also added a custom shutter to one of the upstairs bedrooms. In the other bedrooms with standard size windows I’m using a combination of woven shades or wood blinds with curtains but in this room, the window was so long and an awkward size and I couldn’t find anything store bought that would be suitable so shutters made sense in here too.

This is a smaller bedroom at 10 x 9 ½ feet, big enough for a crib, twin (or set of bunks) and a dresser but not much more so I saw it as a great kids room and painted it a soft aqua blue. This room faces west and has a lovely view of the the red rock mountains over the rooftops in the morning but it gets pelted with sun in the afternoon and evening.

Plantation shutters have no cords and darken a room nicely, soooo key for naptime!

I sent them this and with it they were able to make shutters for this space with just a basic sketch.

The magnetic latches are perfectly aligned during install to allow for the shutters to be pulled open or folded back for sliding the windows open and closed.

Installation was a breeze, their professional rep showed up with the shutters to piece it all together and install them in the home. Thanks Julio for a job well done!

We love the new shutters in the living room and kids’ bedroom and the beautiful filtered natural light that is easy to control and complements the style of the home.

  1. I LOVE these Plantation shutters!! I had these in my other home….Beautiful. Easy to Clean! So Elegant!

  2. Perfect timing as we’re looking at Plantation Shutters for our Great Room wall of windows.
    Love the look.
I look forward to your blog posts every day. Love your design, style, color choices – well, just love it all! Thanks!

Sadly, the rafflecopter link isn’t working right now. :-(

  3. Love them! I have had plantation shutters for 16 years and love them as much today as when I first had them installed. Love the clean lines and no fuss window coverings. Great choice!

  4. The plantation shutters make your spaces look planned – rather than just a product of happenstance. I want that too for our home.

  5. I would love plantation shutters. Unfortunately here in Australia they are super expensive. In our last home we had a quote done for 2 rooms – office and bedroom. The cost was almost $10,000. For us that was just way out of our budget. So in that house as in this one we have settled for white wood venetians blinds. But I still dream of shutters and notice them in windows everywhere I go.

  6. Looks fantastic Kate! So versatile! The new place is SO bright! I. NEED. LIGHT.

We had to move our pool equipment to the side of the house (cha-ching) when we did the remodel as well…I just don’t know what they are thinking….well they aren’t thinking. Like when peeps design the laundry room off of the kitchen ~ what? They should be back by the bedrooms, or in the bathrooms or in the master closet!!

We need to become architects Kate…sheeshhh. ;)

  7. What a wonderful giveaway. Have been slowly remodeling our 40 year old house and these would look great in the bedrooms.

Thank you so much for the chance to win.

  8. I have to echo everyone’s sentiments as the shutters look awesome! DO the gorgeous tile floors that look like wood not fade like real wood floors when exposed to too much sun? Also I live in the Northeast and out basement is refinished mostly as a playroom for the kids. We have a walk out basement but the windows are the typical tiny basement windows. When the basement was finished the walls were cut at an angle downward from the bring it more light. Anyway, the tops of the windows are flush with the ceiling – can you use a plantation window there? More for aesthetics and not function since too much light really isn’t a problem in the basement. Thanks.

  9. We’ve been in this new to us home for a little over a year and I’ve been waiting and saving our pennies for plantation shutters. We haven’t installed any thing because I feel thsee are the only options. Plus they make cleaning soon much quicker. Would love to win!

  10. Beautiful and practical, too! Plantation shutters are great at reducing the brutal summer heat and sun here in Phoenix. I love them!

  11. they look so clean and beautiful. i would love to try them in our bedroom or living room. thank you for the chance!

  12. Great timing! We just bought a new house and I want plantation shutters for most of the house but didn’t even know where to start in looking. I will definitely be checking out Smith & Noble. And who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky and win!

  13. I am so excited that you posted this! I just bought a home with plantation shutters and I love them! Unfortunately they are in only a few rooms and I need more. Great to know that Smith and Noble sells them. Thank you for the chance to win them!

  14. Have been thinking about plantation shutters for my kitchen and dining room. I like the clean look and the options of a lot of light or very little light coming in through the shutters.

  15. I really want to get plantation shutters in the future! So pretty. How long are the $30 off coupons good for?

  16. It’s so beautiful white, but isn’t it a nightmare to clean? Sometimes is such a dilemma, when you have to choose beauty, but hard maintenance.

  17. I am so curious about the custom window upstairs! Will you be posting details? Thanks to you and Smith & Noble for the giveway opportunity, I have two architectural windows in my bedroom that I am completely lost on how to deal with.
