Style Mix: Wood Tables + White Chairs

By Kate Riley October 23, 2014

I’m most drawn to rooms where traditional elements are mixed with modern pieces, it makes a space feel more collected and less matchy matchy or straight from a big box store. Dining rooms are great place to ignore the old rules of a perfectly matched set and mix it up by pairing modern or industrial with traditional or cottage styles.

The marriage of traditional and contemporary is labeled “transitional” in design, you can never go wrong with a wood plus white medley as these dining rooms demonstrate. Pack a modern punch with the additional use of a bold wallpaper or textile, or black and white photography and a statement light fixture too !

  1. In our breakfast room, we have a round antique table with chairs that are contemporary in style and I love the mismatched look. It’s interesting and casual. However, for our dining room, I prefer our matched Queen Anne chairs and table. It’s more formal looking, of course, but to me, nothing could be more beautiful in furniture and we do use it a lot for family gatherings. I just had to put in a word for the traditional look, as there are a lot of us who still like it.

  2. Great ideas!! All of our stuff is so dated that it’s pathetic. We have the solid oak furniture. I’ve never liked Early American {sorry all you Early American lovers} and Hubby doesn’t want to get rid of perfectly good solid furniture :-( We downsized and the dining room furniture is too massive for it. Sorry I just had to vent!! I’m still trying to figure how to get it where it is pleasing.

  3. Awesome inspiration! I have been going back and forth between stripping my dining room table and staining it or leaving it. I totally want to that wood now!

  4. Love mixing woods. Question: How do you feel about the wall paper in a formal dining room? Considering a silver pattern with dark woods and gold accents. Just worried about the future resale and how long wall paper maybe fashionable

  5. While I love your style and everything thing you do, I’m from Kansas so I have to say GO ROYALS!!! :)

  6. The examples you gave a cheerful, pretty and usable. Lovely post. Right now I am searching for a base for an old barn door I am making into a table. The X style table base you show may just end up being what I make for the old door! Thanks for the inspiration! If you want to see what I end up doing you can find my project over at WordPress under The Vintage Tweed.

  7. Not a big fan of the first photo; the white Windsor chairs seem kind of intrusive. Love the others, especially the third one with the crazy bird foot chairs paired with the ornate gold leaf settee.

    And yes–GO GIANTS!!

  8. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems (from looking at the photos) that the point of pairing of white chairs with a wood table is to keep the focus on the table? It really seems to tone down the busy-ness of having so much of the same wood tone. So instead of having a whole dining unit, you look at the separate pieces. But maybe I’m over-thinking it.

  9. Such a cool combination! I hadn’t really thought about putting together white and wood like that, but all those dining rooms look fantastic. My favorite though is the one with the mis-matched chairs; I have a bit of soft spot for mis-matched things. Love all of these – thanks for sharing!

  10. I love this style and am trying to achieve it in my living room right now with – er – not much success.

Have to say, last night was some game. The Giants were ON FIRE.

  11. Hey, we are renovating our place and this was so inspirational! But actually I am thinking about something different – wood table and white and green (may be plastic) chairs. What do you think about this type of a combination when we mix wood with plastic? Thanks a lot ! :)

  12. We have this combination in our house! When we gutted and refinished our basement a few years ago, we allowed space for a four-person dinning table. (The basement acts as our family room/eating/hang out area in our ranch). I was in love with the Arc Base Pedestal table from West Elm (dark and round), so I purchased that along with creamy white parson chairs. I love how it looks!
