Trending: Copper for Fall

August 21, 2014

As we were driving home from our month in the desert I kept lamenting how I just didn’t want summer to end. Not yet! The warm weather, the laid back days, the time spent outdoors. When I arrived home I spied the pile of mail and fall catalogs that awaited me on the dining room table. Swiping the bills aside for a later, I dove right into my fall catalogs and after an hour of perusing them it hit me: I think I might possibly be almost ready for fall. Harvest time, pumpkin spice lattes, scarves and cable knit sweaters. Yes, I’m almost ready.

While reading, one of the things that stood out was the presence of copper in decor. While we’ve seen it popping up everywhere since spring it seems copper is officially the “it” metal for fall. While you’ll never erase my love of antiqued brass and gold leaf finishes, bits of copper feel so lovely right now. This warm metal with its underlying rose/orange tone is a traditional one and centuries old in its use; it’s fun to see it sculpted into new shapes and contemporary looks.

I dont’ want summer to end either, but I get to create more in the fall and colder weather, so there is a benefit to fall coming :)

  8. Angelina says:

What a great idea! Copper is he perfect color for fall. I am loving that tray from cost plus (and of course all of those pots and pans.)

  9. Great post! I’m loving the copper trend, and I love how you featured a wide range of products plus some DIY projects.

  10. Emily Bennett says:

The thing I love best about copper is not something you featured here. I love when it gets that green patina as it ages. I’m not such a big fan of shiny copper, but I have a penny backsplash and old copper handles on my cabinets and I love them!

  11. I am so excited! I have lots of copper and it is finally back in vogue. Wow!! I will even put copper in our bedroom. Now I have to find an easy way to clean all I’ve got.

  12. Karin says:

I am so excited! Copper is my favorite material to work with – I make jewelry. Now it’ll be easier to find and incorporate it into decorating my home as well! Love all the examples you posted!

  13. Connie says:

I’m installing copper roll as my backsplash. Easy to clean and care for unlike the tiles that are stamped and have tiny crevices to clean or grouting. Can’t wait to get it in.

  14. Jules says:

We are about to add copper spouting and downpipes to the exterior of our home. We think it will work with the stone exterior and timber doors. It will acquire patina over time and become even more beautiful.

  15. AJ says:

I love copper! But never thought about using copper pipe for accents…going to redo my kitchen next year, so I am going to definitely keep this in mind. I was planning on painting it a greenish Patina color so the copper will go wonderfully with it!

  16. Shawna says:

Love it! Refreshing change from all the brushed nickel/stainless that’s been popular forever. And, yes, I’m totally okay with mixing metals!

  17. Gillianne says:

Our house had its original ’60s kitchen copper hardware and fixtures. We updated the basics, replaced stained formica counters with slate, lightened the dark cabinets, but left the dated copper hinges and put simpler copper knobs and pulls in place of shapes that weren’t comfortable for hands. With the original Mad Men light fixture (teardrop shape, thick frosted glass), it all suits the house and wooded setting. Still appreciate those bits of copper but wouldn’t want more.

    Sounds beautiful Gilliane!

  19. Centsational Girl says:

Agreed Emily, I love the oxidized patina, those verdigris rooftops of many church domes and historical buildings across Europe!

  20. Wow, I am so excited to be included in this roundup of awesome copper ideas! Thank you so much! A copper shelf like the one above is definitely on my to-do list :)

  21. Deb says:

I love copper!! We’ve had copper touches in our kitchen for many years including a copper KitchenAid mixer. It’s warmer than silver, less luxe than gold. It’s like the Goldilocks story of metals – just right.

  22. We absolutely adore copper – particularly with a hammered finish. It’s so classic and we’re excited to see it used in non-traditional items – those serving trays are divine!

  23. You know my love for copper! I look forward to adding some of these beautiful ideas & finds to our home!

  24. Peggy says:

I’ve loved copper for four decades. Copper was fairly popular back in the late 70s/early 80s and my first pots and pans were RevereWare (I still have them – well, my son inherited most of them). I have a nice collection of pots and pans collected over the years, all with a gorgeous aged patina thanks to continual use. My mom recently gave me a large handled french antique copper pot that she stored firewood in and a french hammered copper soup pot that I use for canning. I smile every time I look at my copper pieces.
