Best of July & August

By Kate Riley September 4, 2013

I failed to roundup the best of July earlier this summer so I’m including both today, here are the not to miss posts from August and July on the blog!

The guest room got a few upgrades; I was inspired by the tiled staircases of Santa Barbara; many of you agreed with the reasons to choose laminate kitchen countertops; a dresser got a new look with blue paint.

I styled a rustic & refined dining room for World Market and began a color series exploring the following: red / yellow / purple / green / coral. More colors to follow including tomorrow’s look at orange (‘tis the season!)

I posted my favorite black & white films and many of you chimed in too (great comments!); I featured some tips for growing and caring for lavender. Thanks for your input on hardwood vs. lookalike tile; some DIY personalized notecards you can make; mixing wood tones; and the completion of the painted bathroom cabinets with a step-by-step.

I’m so grateful you all continue to come back, thank you so much for reading!

  1. Hi – How are you liking the Skyline upholstered bed so far? I am thinking of ordering the same one for my guest bedroom but have read a lot of negative reviews online so thought of checking in with you. Thank you.

    • so far so good Neha! I have no idea how the larger beds function, two of the joints are *perfectly* straight but that could have been an assembly issue.
The upholstery and linen and nailheads are beautiful though.

  2. You were very busy this summer!! All great work. I just love the tile backsplash you chose. The wooden countertop sets it off nicely. I’m with you totally on the laminate countertop. We did the same in our kitchen make-over. We tiled our island and used laminate on the other counters. It looks great and saved us a bundle. We spent the extra money on nicer appliances, handles and a pretty faucet.

  3. I am such a fan, Kate. Look forward to your posts and the “eye candy”. One of my sisters who is 13 years younger than I was truly happy when I sent her a connection. Now, she, too, is a fan. Thank you, thank you! from both of us.

  4. Thank you Kate. I am taking a long shot here – but do you remember the model name of this particular bed. There are so many options on their website and I want to make sure I order something that other people have tried and liked. So please let me know if you still remember. BTW – I love your blog. I started reading it just recently but have been already been so inspired to take up a couple of DIY projects. Thanks for the inspiration.
