4th of July Painted Placemat & Napkin

June 25, 2013

Hello all, are you excited for the upcoming Fourth of July? It’s one of my favorite holidays, I love the food and patriotic traditions!  Some years we host a party since we have a fantastic view of the local fireworks show from our front yard. In other years we’ll visit someone else’s home. This year my parents are hosting and we’ll spend the day poolside and then do the traditional fireworks observation at night.

I got crafty this year playing off Old Glory’s red and white stripes and white stars on a blue background to create a fun place setting. I partnered with ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape Brand to create a striped painted placemat and accompanying star spangled napkin, embellished with a fireworks inspired detail on top.

To recreate you’ll need red placemats, blue napkins, white craft tape, ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape; a roller, artist’s paintbrush, tray for paint, star punch from a craft store, and red pipe cleaners (not shown).

Here’s the simple step by step:

First grab yourself some red placemats (I found these at Kohls) but you can also find similar versions at discount retail stores. Mark of the placement of your future stripes and use the tape to create the stripes lengthwise.

Two to three coats of white craft paint gives you a nice stripe, pull back the tape when the paint is dry.

step 3

I created a stencil with the tape and a star punch, make sure you turn the tape upside down and carefully pull tape through the punch to create an adhesive stencil that will stick to your napkin. Add the stars with white paint and a small artist’s brush.

step 5

Twist four red pipe cleaners make a fireworks inspired napkin holder.

Sprinkle stars made from the hole punch on top of the placemat for a unique Fourth of July place setting.

Very cute! And thank you for NOT using the American Flag as a tablecloth! Some other publications need a lesson in Flag Etiquette 101, but we know better ;) Happy Fourth of July!

  6. I agree with Virginia Mom about not using the American Flag. But, this way to celebrate the 4th is so cute, patriotic and looks very easy to do. Pinned. Thanks for sharing.
