Organization Please!

By Kate Riley June 26, 2012

There’s that old saying, “I need a vacation from my vacation!” and it couldn’t be more true today.  My house is such a mess right now, the suitcases are still not unpacked, the laundry is crazy out of control, the stack of bills needs paid, the emails are many, the piles are mounting, and I’m still recovering from that exhausting red-eye return flight across the country.   Why do the kids bounce back so much faster?

With fun and functional organization on the brain this week I wrote about it over at BH&G, here are the two most recent articles:

ten smart ideas for family organization creative ways to display jewelry

Also, for a fun diversion there’s a quiz I spotted online which will diagnose your organization personality.  I was hoping for the question “what is the organizational state of your home?” and the choice of “total disaster” but it wasn’t there so I turned out to be a “party planner” type.

  1. I expected “Party Planner,” but instead I got “Artist.” I would NEVER use that word to describe myself, but I’m fascinated by the key traits the quiz reported:
    •Visual in thinking and learning
    •Very loyal to friends
    •Sometimes late to appointments
    •A pack rat
With the exception of the word “Sometimes,” which should have been “Always” or, to be generous, “Usually”, those are pretty darn accurate!

    Thanks, Kate!

P.S. Had a great time at Haven. Loved meeting you. Thanks again for your San Francisco posts!

  2. I got school teacher. seems kinda like me I guess

    You are the Schoolteacher
    key traits

    Predictable and reliable
Structured, but not afraid of spontaneity
    A rule-follower

  3. I am the Librarian, kind of but not totally true all the time. Depends on how much sleep I get or if I’ve got my head shoved in a good book.

    key traits
    •Detailed and a taskmaster
    •Energetic
•A perfectionist, sometimes to a fault

  4. I too got party planner. I pretty much agree with the description. But reading the other comments, and seeing that school teacher was an option, I’m a little surprised I didn’t get that one considering I really am a school teacher. Then again, if you ever saw my classroom, you’d see I’m not crazy organized :)

  5. Hummmm, I’m a Librarian???? I don’t think I answered honestly! I have closets that contents tumble onto my head when the door opens.

  6. Your Organization Personality is:
    You are the Librarian
    key traits:

    Detailed and a taskmaster
    Energetic
A perfectionist, sometimes to a fault

    Yeppers. Tis moi.

  7. Pegged as a school teacher! I’m a stay at home mom that loves organization, details, and following the rules.. That’s me!

  8. I got party planner. Not sure…I think of myself as more of an archeologist….everything is piled in layers and if I can remember when I had something I can guesstimate how far down inthe pile it might be.

Loved your paint session at Haven.

  9. I am in fact a librarian, yet I got Party Planner! Ha. I think they might be confusing cataloging librarians with all librarians.

  10. I fantasize about being one of those super organized “everything in it’s place” people. I used to be close to that, but since kids I have had to let go of some expectations!
I got Schoolteacher and after clicking the link and reading the more detailed explanation, I have to agree – “Do you consider yourself a semiorganized person and feel less stressed when your home is neat but find that, despite your best intentions, your desk still gets buried under papers? Then you might have what professional organizer Audrey Thomas calls a schoolteacher’s organization personality. Because getting things done on time is important to you, breaking larger projects into smaller steps, with staggered due dates, is a great way to stay motivated.”

    • That’s such a great tip Tracey, thanks for sharing it! It’s an ongoing struggle around here!

  11. I got school teacher as well! I’m a currently a substitute teacher working towards my masters so this kind of made me chuckle :)

  12. I got Party Planner too!! Easily distracted, is a definite trait of mine. Oh look, shiny thing!!!

  13. “You are the Librarian
    key traits

    Detailed and a taskmaster
    Energetic
A perfectionist, sometimes to a fault”

Yeah, that is me, but sometimes im a little lazy, too.

  14. I am a librarian?!?! I immediately pictured glasses on the end of my nose. I can connect with your feelings of being overwhelmed. I try to look at my laundry and picture my kids in it having fun, my bills as blessings (???) because I am lucky I can pay them, and those piles as a challenge for me to use my organizational skills to whip them into shape. Ha. I really am trying to be positive here.

  15. this was so fun! thanks for this post. sometimes i feel like i’m the only one who needs to step up my organization. i like your idea of using cute pails with the kids names for all their activity stuff over at bh&g. that way it’s all in one spot and your not looking for it last minute.

  16. Class dismissed..lol. I am the “School teacher” which is so very true. I have never wanted to be anything else in my life since, the age of 10. I did attend college, majoring in Special Education, but due to my own cognitive/processing issues, which of course many decades ago could not be diagnosed, I did not return for my senior year. Regardless, even the frozen foods in my freezer are labelled to the exact pound of the contents. I am sure you’ll be back on course within a very short period of time, creating something new for us to enjoy.

  17. Hmmm librarian…pretty close, I think

    •Detailed and a taskmaster
    •Energetic
•A perfectionist, sometimes to a fault

  18. I got “schoolteacher.” The description is pretty accurate, even though I’m not sure why the name is “schoolteacher.” :) Love your blog–I’m a long time lurker, but this might be my very first comment!

  19. Artist! It does fit me. I love organization, but am not very organized, its very daunting for me to know HOW to be. Great ideas tho!

  20. SCHOOL TEACHER … but I am not in real life. It was pretty accurate tho. Thank you for the quick fun test!
    Hugs,
    Bj

  21. I got librarian… thats pretty interesting… I’m an OCD so it totally fits!

  22. I got School teacher. I thought I might get party planner as it’s what I love to do, but hey school teacher works to! Great quiz thanks :)
