A Troublesome Cat and a Great Vacuum

June 9, 2012

Hello everyone and happy weekend to you!  We have plans to do some gardening and attend a friend’s wedding, the weather should be perfect!  But first, please allow me to share a recent phenomenon in our household and then tell you how we deal with it.

Our youngest member of the family is Coco the kitten and she is very mischievous and her latest fascination is with toilet paper.  Is this a common thing with cats?  I don’t know, but it never fails when friends come over, she engages in her latest wily maneuver which is a full blown attack on a roll of toilet paper.  We laugh, but I haven’t been able to keep the stuff on the holders or nicely stacked in baskets for weeks for fear of inevitable destruction.

Charmin is like catnip and it sends Coco into a tizzy and it’s typical for her to drag a roll across the house, bat it around like a mouse, and then attack it with frenzied claws.  When caught, she always has this look on her face.

Hold that image in your head while I fill you in on our vacuum situation.  The vacuum we’ve had for ten years is great, but it’s a beast – not a fun one to work with for the sole reason it weighs a ton and hurts my back to lift it.  Since we have a lot of carpet upstairs and several area rugs downstairs, I confess I procrastinate in my vacuuming duties and always ask Matt if he can help me with the chore.  One time it literally ate the edge of an area rug and I’ve been bitter ever since.

Well as luck would have it, one of my lovely sponsors Oreck offered to send me a lightweight household Magnesium vacuum cleaner to try out, and my immediate response was “Um, yes, please”.  Its arrival coincided perfectly with the “Cat versus the Toilet Paper” battles that have been a part of our daily lives for over a month now.

We’ve been using our 7.7 pound Magnesium upright for a few weeks and we really do love it.  For such a lightweight vacuum it packs a lot of power and at two levels, a low setting for area rugs and a higher setting for carpets.  After we begrudgingly clean up the biggie toilet paper sections, the Magnesium grabs the littler pieces under the watchful eye of our rascally cat.

oreck magnesiumMy four favorite things about this vacuum

1) It’s so lightweight your kids can use it!  Yes, I’ve convinced mine that “vacuuming is fun!” with this one so they do some of it for me (ha!)

2)  It’s so lightweight I can carry it upstairs with one hand and not suffer any back problems from heavy lifting and that makes me very happy.

3) It works really well on all my downstairs wood floors and is quicker than a broom, and,

4)  its thin profile lets it lay down flat and go anywhere easily especially under furniture or beds.

What I don’t like?  The “on” button is silver plastic and feels insubstantial but so far so good, no issues to date, and I do like the lighter setting for area rugs.  I also think it’s expensive at $499 for just the vacuum and I guess I just have a hard time spending that kind of dough on home cleaning stuff when I’d rather spend it on a pretty chair, but as my husband reminded me the other day, “That’s what good vacuums cost”.  Okay then.

Here’s some great news, Oreck is giving away one Magnesium vacuum to a lucky winner this weekend!

Magnesium frame is stronger than many other kinds of steel.

    I tweeted! @VSKelly

  5. Greta says:

This vacuum looks amazing. I think it is great that it lays flat so it can go under furniture. I am always having trouble reaching spots under the bed or couch.

  6. Marilyn says:

I love that it has a two speed Quickswitch

  7. Christy says:

HEPA inner filter would make it great for my kitty with asthma!

  8. Jennifer S says:

I love that it will work on carpet and tile. The lightweight feature is an extra bonus!

  9. Gabby says:

Yes, this can be common in cats. I’ll do you one better, though. My male Siamese cat likes to take out used tissues from the waste basket and play with them. When he was a kitten, he would shred it to pieces. Not anymore, but still. When I have really bad allergy days or a cold, it never fails — we always find used tissues all over the apartment. (We’ve gotten quite a few lidded waste baskets, but it’s easier in the bedroom to not have one.) Ah, the joys of owning pets! ^_^

  10. Kimberly says:

I love that it lays virtually flat for easy cleaning under furniture!

I shared about the giveaway on facebook. :)

  13. Steph says:

I learned that the Oreck Magnesium Vacuum is gentle enough for fine Oriental and Persian rugs. Ooh la la!

Unfortunately, I don’t have an Oriental rug, nor a Persian, but I do have an old vacuum that’s on the outs and doesn’t like to pick things up off the carpets any more. Ooh la la?

This vacuum sounds awesome, and it would be a thrill – and huge help! – to win. We’ve been having the “vacuums cost HOW much?” discussion in my home as well =)

  14. Carolyn S says:

Love that it can lay virtually flat for easy cleaning under furniture.

  15. Auntiepatch says:

I have a new vacuum & it does ok but an Oreck? Be still my heart!

  16. Auntiepatch says:

I didn’t know that anyone made a vacuum that vacuumed flat! What a great feature! I currently have to move furniture to get to the cat hair! What a back/time saver! I have 2 older cats and 2 “teen” cats. One of the Teen cats emptied a roll of TP into the trash but didn’t make a mess like your cat. I’m not sure WHY a cat would do this other than the Hunter Instint. Good luck breaking her of this game!

  17. Auntiepatch says:

    I liked Oreck on FB.

  18. Lora says:

Lol! I love your cat! I have many friends who cannot keep TP on the roll. I really like the flatness of the vacuum – that’s AMAZING!! thanks!

  19. Laura J says:

I like the really light weight. That’d be great for carrying it upstairs!

  20. Susan says:

I just moved into a new two story home and the lightweight nature of the Magnesium, along with it’s ability to go from rugs to hardwood instantly are very appealing. I have two labs and my house looks like it needs to be vacuumed as soon as I finish! My older boy, Utah, is also addicted to toilet paper!!

  21. AmandaT says:

Wow, the Saniseal system sounds great. My dust mite allergies just kill me every time I change the bag in our old one. Fantastic giveaway!

  22. Kristen says:

That two-speed “Quickswitch” sounds like a great feature. We have one vacuum now for all three floors of our house – we have standard carpet, area rugs on top of carpet, and hardwood floors – and I have to turn off the machine, bend down, rotate a very stiff dial to adjust, and get back up to start vacuuming all over again. We also have a young cat with a paper fetish AND a big hairy dog who is just entering shedding season. And three children. My poor husband steam cleans all our carpets at least once a month. I can’t even carry the vacuum up and down stairs, it’s that heavy. I would love something both light AND powerful like this so that I can actually vacuum the ENTIRE house while he’s away on business.

When I was married to my ex-husband we had an Oreck. I loved it but unfortunately he kept it in the divorce while I continued to pay it off. The price tag has frightened me away from buying another. Thanks for the chance to win!

  23. Angie says:

Love the 7 year warranty with 3 tune-ups! I need a new vacuum and this one would be great to keep upstairs!

  24. Elaine says:

We have to leave our bathroom doors closed so that the cats don’t claw up the toilet paper, or worse, chew on the water supply line behind the toilet! With two cats and two dogs, the Oreck Magnesium sounds amazing, especially with 102 mph of airflow that will suck away all the fur!

  25. Maggie says:

I have mostly hardwood floors so the fact that it works on both hardwood and carpet and is so easy to switch is the feature I like

  26. O, golly it weighs 7.7 pounds without the cord (and how much can that possibly weigh). I really need a lightweight full-forced vacuum. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

  27. I shared your Oreck giveaway on my FB page. Jo @ Let’s Face the Music

  28. michelle butler says:

I agree with the light idea! sure makes carrying it upstairs not such a workout!

  29. Melissa says:

It has a hand held vac that comes with it. I would love that, especially since my Black and Decker one is pooping out.

  30. kristin m. says:

virtually flat? that’s exactly what i need to fit under my furniture! – kristinmik at gmail

  31. Fen says:

I love that it’s powerful and yet gentle enough for fine Oriental and Persian rugs! Very versatile!

  32. rachele says:

I learned that it comes with a handy-vac… how handy! I want this!

  33. Amy says:

Love the 7 year warranty, my fiance break everything! ;) AWESOME giveaway!

  34. Patti says:

I learned it is 7.7 pounds, and I have to have it!

  35. DJ says:

That’s cool. I had looked at Oreck some time ago (but not the Magnesium). I like that it has extensions. I’d rather wave the vacuum wand at the drapes than take them down for cleaning!

  36. Nicole says:

You house sounds amazingly like mine: troublesome (but cute!) kittens, a heavy vaccum, and lots of carpet upstairs with hardwood/area rugs downstairs. I need a lighter vaccum and do not even dare to dream about the cost.

About the Oreck: its Magnesium frame is stronger than many types of steel. Who knew?!?!?!

  37. Beth D. says:

the 2 speed quick switch allows you to go from one floor surface to another. Yipee! Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  38. Linda says:

I would love to try the Oreck Magnesium! I have a Kirby that I love, but it is soooo heavy, and as a result I totally procrastinate vacuuming my carpeted double staircase which is baaaad since that’s where our dog Cody loves to sit all day when we’re at work and school (he naps on the landing where he can practically see the whole block!) Kate, have you tried it on stairs?

  39. Jamie says:

I like the 2 speed switch on the back that allows for easy transitions between surfaces!

  40. Janaki says:

I think it’s great that you can use the Magnesium on Oriental and Persian rugs. Thanks for the giveaway!

  41. Valerie M says:

The Oreck Magnesium has all the features that my expensive, cumbersome, beast of a Dyson does not – but I have to say that the “Quickswitch” function for switching between my carpets and hardwoods sounds like a dream. I am crossing my fingers and thank you for the opportunity!

  42. Natalie M. says:

I LOVE the magnesium! I especially love that it is so light and it lays virtually flat! That should make cleaning under furniture a breeze!!

  43. Ellen says:

I love that I can use it on all my floors! It seems easy with the Quick Switch. I am also excited that it lays flat to go under furniture. I have a 21 month old and she tends to drop food and crumbs on the floor and it always seems to land under the couch. Finally, it would be nice to have a vacuum that could pick up dog hair and not just push it around!

  44. Ellen says:

I just posted a link on my twitter acct.

  45. Kat Skull says:

I’m looking at the ability of the Magnesium to lay flat to fit underneath my furniture – it would be awesome to vacuum under my bed. Also, the cylindrical wheel bearings would make it great for my carpet!

  46. Bee says:

I love the idea of the “Quickswitch” that enables you to move quickly from carpet to hardwood. Plus 7.7 lbs sounds incredible.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  47. Paula says:

Love that it works on hardwood and carpet, and lies flat for getting under beds and chairs.

  48. Shelley says:

I like how it can go flat so maybe then I could finally get all the hidden dust bunnies.

  49. Mysty says:

Has settings for high carpet (our upstairs!) and low setting for area rugs and hard wood floors (our downstairs!). Like your comment that it’s better than a broom on the hard wood floors!

  50. Mysty says:

    Just posted on Twitter (@PlayMsT4Me).

  51. Melody says:

I love that it has a 30ft cord so I could vacuum lots of rooms without having to stop and replug several times.

  52. Cassie says:

I love how flat it goes, so it can go under the couch.

  53. Nikki says:

I love that it can fit under my couch!

  54. bridget says:

I love that it is has hepa filter, totally necessary for me little kids to get rid of all those allergens!

  55. Courtney says:

It has an “easy snap cord” feature to wrangle the cord… sounds like a great idea to me since mine is forever unraveling and falling in the floor. ;-)

  56. Beatriz says:

I have to say that I love the warranty on this machine! Vacuums are put through the grinder and I’ve gone through a few in my days. I also love the hand-held vac.

  57. Teresa says:

The Magnesium has an extremely strong, durable magnesium frame!!

  58. Amanda C says:

Flat and long cord! I spend so much time prying my child-protecting guards off my outlets- I hate vacuuming but that makes it even worse because I have to switch outlets for every room! Thanks for the giveaway!

  59. Emily Johnston says:

I like the Hepa bag, but the self-propelled sounds even better! How loud is it, Kate?
As for kitteh… I think my little Sophie has just noticed toilet paper! I hope I can distract her with hair ties instead.

  60. Neva says:

TP as prey — yes, VERY common! I had a litter of five who ganged up on a case of TP — it wasn’t pretty. I got a cheap stepcan at Bed, Bath and Beyond and keep rolls of TP in there. A little confusing for guests but c’est la vie. Oh, and the kiities?: Hoover, Dyson, Eureka, Kirby and… ORECK! Lol

  61. Sarah says:

Magnesium is the lightest, full-powered upright in America. That will make it easy for me to carry up three flights of stairs!

  62. Elizabeth says:

The Oreck Magnesium’s wheels make it easy to push — even through high pile carpet. I like that!

  63. Karen T. says:

I love that it says you can go from deep/high pile carpets to oriental/persian rugs with no problem. I sure could use a new vacuum. Sure hope I win!

  64. Kari M. says:

I love how light-weight this vacuum is!

  65. CentsationalGirl says:

Hello Ms. C, the story of the sofa is here!

  66. Charles Green, says:

Reminds of my own cat and his troubles. I love his pictures – espcially glaring at the camera like s/he dodn;t do anything wrong.
