January is always a dreary month for me, it usually rains and rains and keeps us all indoors, but we’ve been having a mild winter so far and it’s changing the way I feel about this season. At least for today. I decided to be positive and focus on a few things I actually like about winter. For example:
Hot tea on a cold day
An abundance of citrus
Cozy {faux fur} blankets
Indoor gardens
Lit fireplaces
What are your winter favorites?
.
I love the room in the last (fireplace) photo! It’s exactly the inspiration I’ve been looking for for my living room. Are there more photos of that room?
Hi Alla, thanks! I took a few at Christmas but I’ll have to take some more pics of my living room and post them, meanwhile you can glance at these from last summer:
http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/05/sea-inspired-summer-living-room/ But you’ll notice I keep moving things around its a habit… :)
Kate
I have to say I’m a huge fan of all that you just mentioned (and pictured so beautifully, I might add!)
One thing I need during the winter is a hot starbucks drink with a fleecy blanket. It just makes all of the trudging though snow & winter ickiness melt away… :)
Beautiful pictures Kate! Nothing beats a hot cup of tea/coffee, a roaring fire, a cozy blanket and a GOOD BOOK!!
All your favorites, are my favorites :) Though I have to say, today (in Nebraska!) its 65 degrees. So I’m not currently cold or miserable … Still, some of my favorite things about wintertime are hot soup, sledding, ice skating, skiing, and warming my feet on the register. :)
Movie marathons, cozy sweaters, furry boots, and comfort food!
Taking time to go to bed earlier and read with a cozy throw. All of the wonderful delights you mentioned
xoxo

I like being able to curl under the blankets too, I love hot chocolate, I love big sweaters and cardigans and layering in general. I’d rather be cold than too hot, so I like January a lot more than I like August. And I love scarves, I cant get enough of them!
Definitely blankets & hot chocolate!! {I am in LOVE with the mirror in that last picture btw!}
Down comforter, fireplace and a good book. Adore the rug in the last photo…may I ask who makes it?
Hi Pam, the rug was a World Market find last year on clearance, I have only 6 x 9 rugs in my house so I rotate them with the seasons, this one used to be in the family room, but I swapped them. I checked the WM site, but can’t find it there…. I had saved the tag somewhere but now I can’t find that either so I don’t even know its name, if it turns up, I’ll post it here!
Kate
Knitted Scarfs, Wooly socks, and rosie-cheeked bebes!! (so smoochable!)
I love snuggling in front of a fire. I am in love with your area rug in that last photo. Where did you get it?
Pretty photos, Kate. I love a hot cup of tea, cozy sweaters and throws, homemade soups and getting cozy by the fire with a good book or magazine.
Blankets & Fire’s – For Sure.
I’m wrapped in a blanket next to my wood burning fireplace as I leave this comment. :)
Hi! What is the paint color used in the last room? So beautiful!
Hi Vicki, the paint color is a tweaked formula from Benjamin Moore’s Affinity line called “Tranquilty” – the Ben formula is here:

leggings, big ole blanket sweaters, and big thick fuzzy socks.
A plane ticket, to warmer locales. Janell
Winter and favorites just don’t work in the same sentence for me.
We are moving to San Diego before another cold, bleak, windy Oregon winter rolls in by us.
Fingers crossed for my IT hubby getting a job in the sunshine state!
I love to knit and quilt and make soup and all that jazz, however, I am OVER winter in all its forms.
A cup of green tea and your blog! Oh, and red wine.
Oh yes Elyse, red wine, year round!!! :D
A nice soak in a hot tub with a good book — the only challenge is trying to keep the book dry.
beautiful Kate!!!! and somebody got a new rug!! That rug is gorge! Also love your Barbara Barry Poetical pillows on the bed-its one of my favorite prints.
I’m a big fan of the fire with a warm puppy curled up next to me, a cup of cocoa and a good sappy movie!
I love your house!! :) Great images for winter. You just inspired me to create a little container garden for the indoors with stones and air plants/succulents. I love the vase/brandy glass you used for yours.

We are crazy for lemons right now. This is the time of year we always have a cup of tea after we finish with coffee.
I love how cozy and warm this looks!
Love all the pictures you posted! For me, one of my winter favorites is to take a hot steamy shower using the Body Shop’s Satsuma shower gel. It has such strong and invigorating citrusy scent. Another favourite is to book a cruise vacation right after Christmas so that we have something to look forward to in Feb/Mar. And the winter seems so much shorter that way.
Even though “winter” and “Texas” don’t go that well together, I love the few chilly days we get here in Austin. Curling up in front of our fireplace with a cup of coffee first thing in the morning is the best way to start the day!
where did you purchase the white mirror? I have been wanting it forever!!! Great pics!!!
My favorites are s’mores cooked over a roaring fire, hot cocoa with marshmallows, and hot toddies, yum:)
2 weeks ago it was -41 degrees {Celsious} in my city….-50 with the wind chill factor! One of my absolute winter favs is flannel jammies…..freshly warm from the dryer and put on right before bed and a magic bag warmed up in the microwave to keep my feet toasty. My 10 yr. old son likes to wear a fleece hat to bed when it’s that cold and so does my husband. My daughter (15 yr.s) still sleeps in her shorts and tank top!!!!!! so go figure! Wishing you a wonderful week Kate! Beautiful post…as always! Angie xo
Hot cocoa, a good book, and snuggling on the couch for sure! That photo of your fireplace looks so inviting!! When can I come over? LOL!
Megan
I LOVE your living room paint color! So beautiful!
I’m also in love with that rug! What a beautiful room.
My Winter favorites:
1. Snow
2. Snow
3. pots of soup
4. cozy evenings with Mr. Secret Agent
5. quilts on the bed
6. knitting
7. Snow…can you tell I love Snow?
8. knowing Spring is not far away

I love the snow! It makes for BEAUTIFUL photography!

Starting some herb seeds indoors! And cuddling up under a fluffy down comforter.
Hot tea, a comfy blanket, my slippers and a fabulous book–oh, and a fire too!! Sigh. Wish I were cozy at home instead of at work! Haha.
Being a Florida girl and relocating to NC, I was so excited to be able to buy beautiful coats and jackets. Something you really do not need in the Sunshine State. Maybe one light coat and jacket. Now I am obsessed with all things coats and cute jackets..Also, just love sitting in front of the fire with a great cup of tea and gazing outside and seeing the beautiful bare branches against a crisp blue Carolina sky. Life is good.
P.S. Your living room rug is amazing!
“Winter” in Arizona means something quite a bit different than “winter” most other places in the country. My favorite part of winters in AZ are cool but sunny Saturday mornings when I get to put on a light scarf and head out to the farmer’s market. Summers are too hot for most of our markets to stay open, so I take advantage of as much of the local fruits and veggies as I can between October and April!
hot chocolate, wine, fireplaces, hot tubs, baked goodies and snuggling with the hubs.
and I LOVE those pillows on the bed – where are those from?
raleighweds.blogspot.com
Slow cooker soups and snow balls!
Ahhh! I love winter- and we get Snow with a capital ‘S’.
I looooove snow covered everthing- I love how it defines every branch of a tree (would love to have a good camera to capture such images- if you buy an expensive camera does it comes with mad skillz)
My Faves:
Fire in the wood stove
Hot tea
Candles
Homemade soup or
Chili
Wooly knit throws
Watching chickadees & cardinals eating from the bird feeder in our tree
Tobogganing or snowshoeing
Hot Chocolate (after tobogganing)
Reading a good book (by the fire, with a tea, under a wooly knit throw)
My kids building a snowman or any other snow activities that bring kids joy
Oh yeah, and not having to worry about weeding my garden
What lovely photos and those are all winter favorites. When I come home in the evenings I tend to light some candles around the house. Since it gets dark early, they provide some coziness.
And I make a lot of soup, probably about 5-7 different kinds so far, which is fun to do when it’s cool outside.
Hope you are enjoying your tea :-)
P.S. We’ve been having a very mild winter too, it’s fabulous!
Just reading everyone’s posts makes me appreciate winter in a whole new light! Kate, I have a monochromatic bedroom scheme, as well, and I would love to find a throw like yours. Would you share the details of obtaining this one? Uh, I don’t mean the actual one on your bed…you may keep it…but one just like it…=^}
Kate,
Since I love winter I’ve been a little blue that we California girls are being cheated out of our winter. But you’ve nailed the things that I love about the season, warm throws, tea, fire in the fireplace…what could be better.
Karen
I love hot chocolate, mandatory pajama days, and soup. I’m not complaining about the mild weather either!
My winter favs: my Uggs, the birds that winter here in the southern California foothills, the light–the sunlight here in the summer can be so harsh, baking and making soup.
What a beautiful post of lovely images. Thanks for sharing it. Especially love the gray throw on the bed.
Where is the rug from?! I am looking for something just like that.
Kellie
Hi Kellie, I found it last year for my family room at World Market but recently swapped it with the living room rug. Sadly, it’s not available anymore which is tragic because it’s lovely!
Kate
I love all of these things too Kate..plus warm soups..fluffy slippers..hot coco and snuggling with a warm kitten..Of course you could snuggle with a warm kitten named Coco..lol
Sorry…confession. I looked at that rug in front of your fireplace and I lost all train of thought about what you were saying..
Hi Kate, I love the terrarium picture with the succulents. I just bought some and am curious about how you planted them. Are they only in rock with no soil? As for watering, do you just mist them? I bought some glass vases and rock at the Dollar Store and am anxious to plant them…any advice? Thanks! :)
I live in Minnesota, and there is a time about 4:30 or 5:00 on a winter day, when it’s kind of cloudy, and you know the sun is about to set, but can’t really see it because of the clouds. The sky gets kind of light blue-grey,almost silver, and the snow cover is white, the oaks and maples have shed their leaves and look brown/black against the sky. That time of day, colors just pop – the mossiness of the evergreens, the pecan color of the fence, the red barn storage shed at the neighbors, the bright blue door on the grey house down the street. I understand why you to love the silvery-blue backdrop in your house. I do too, but I can’t live in it or I look green complected. I just enjoy seeing it around me. And cuddles in front of the fire in the fireplace – and cocoa – and the pets, and a book – all best enjoyed on a winter day.
Thanks for sharing your pictures.
Helen
mmmmmmmmm……… gorgeous, yummy, peaceful. Is that your living room with the beautiful blue paint? Would you mind sharing the colors of your walls and trim? Just painted my master grey and am thinking about painting the ceiling a faint blue. Love this shade. Thanks for sharing.
Is that a potted plant beside your fireplace or is it a tree branch? If it’s a branch did you do anything to it? Looks great!
It’s just a big ol’ branch Tammie, I found it at one of my favorite local shops and begged the owner to give it to me, he finally caved after three months!
can you tell me what the wall color is in the last picture, i just love it!
