Representin’

By Kate Riley October 15, 2010

Because we live to make our friends and family laugh.

And because we’re strange and fun.

And because you need a giggle this Friday.

Meet our front porch pumpkins, representin’ the CG household, yo.

I got this crazy idea from a catalog last year, and I couldn’t wait to try it out.  Let me just tell you, I crack up every time I see these pumpkins.  They’re hilarious.  Last year I painted such beautiful gilded pumpkins, but this year, I’m just getting silly.  Because life’s too short not to get a little crazy and have some fun, right?  :-)

The pumpkins are just your standard store bought variety, ‘mattified’ with a little craft paint.  After brushing on a taupe colored craft paint, I minimized the coverage by wiping it off with a paper towel.  My kids have a couple of Mr. Potato Heads, so we used the parts to make the faces after I made holes with my drill bit.

** Reader comment update: these ‘Potato Head’ kits are available at Target in their Halloween section, woo hoo!

My DIY magnolia leaf wreath is holding up beautifully!  The rug I found last year at Pier One.

Isn’t it fun to get a little crazy at Halloween?

Even if it’s just with a family photo.

It would be absolutely gorgeous in our new guest room.  We just bought out first home and I have to say the DK colors are just breathtaking.  What fantastic inspiration!"

  1. How fun! I don’t think anyone should take Halloween too seriously!

I don’t have Mr. Potato Head parts lying around, but Target carries them specifically for pumpkins in their Halloween section. I think I have a family project for tonight!

  2. How adorable! My 3 year old would love this! (and I’d love not having the mess of carving) she was just introduced to Mr. Potato Head this last summer from Toy Story 3.

  3. OMG! My kids woudl LOVE this! We’re taking a trip to the pumpkin patch tomorrow…can’t wait to make our “Pumpkin Heads”! Thanks for the awesome idea!

  4. Okay, that’s brilliant. I never would have thought of using Mr. Potato Head parts to decorate pumpkins. But you would! Those are just awesome.

One of things I love about the Toy Story movies is how they re-introduced toys like Mr. Potato Head. A whole new generation now can enjoy them. “Ages 3 and up. It’s on the box! Ages 3 and up!” Makes me laugh just to think about it.

  5. I love it! It is hysterical. I am so going out and buying some Mr. Potato Heads and adorning some mini-pumpkins. My girls are older now, so they don’t get into the whole decorating thing much these days…but I know those will give everyone a good laugh!!

  6. Love the potato head parts!!! And I’m totally addicted to the picnik Halloween effects…I can’t help it, but practically every Halloween post I’ve done has some kind of spooky factor! :)

    Have a great weekend!

  7. I saw those kits at Target, they are so cute for those that have kids. I don’t celebrate Halloween and all of the demonic stuff so this is a nice change to see a blogger do a cute display that is family friendly. I like seeing harvest displays and such. By the way your entry area is beautiful!

  8. This is such a cute idea—I’ll bet your kids get a kick out of it too. You’re right, life’s too short not to do silly sometimes!

    Have a great weekend.

  9. They are so fun and funny. That’s what Halloween is all about….having fun and being a kid again. LOVE IT! La

  10. These pumkins are too cute! And I just spotted the silver wreath hanger on your front door window. Is that one of the stick and peel off later kinds of hangers?

PS. Your blog is the first one I go to each day and if I have a busy day it is the only one I make sure to read. You do such a beautiful job.

  11. Too much fun and so appreciated ;) Love the post-card…would be a great Christmas Card idea as well…lol I lucked out this year and found a “cinderella pumpking” that already had a face on it thanks to mother nature ;) http://con-tain-it.typepad.com/my_weblog/2010/10/simple-ways-to-make-fall-festive-a-giveaway.html#tp
Have a wonderful weekend, fondly, Roberta

  12. Oh my oh my, this.is.amazing. It makes me think of Veggie Tales!!! Please tell me you know what Veggie Tales is lol. Anyways if you dont you can get them at christian bookstores, and they are amazing storys for kids that focuse on a certain lesson in each video, like kindness, patience, obeying, etc. And if I failed to mention it the characters are talking veggies!! Its also extremly funny. Love that you did this, I would smile everytime I saw them too :)

  13. Those are pretty much the cutest pumpkins I ever saw! Such an interesting idea to tone them down. I would have never thought of doing that!

I’m trying to come up with a subdued fall look for my mantle and now I’m thinking of using that idea to tone down my pumpkins!

  14. What a happy bunch of pumpkins! They put a smile on my face when I saw them! What a great way to greet your guests. How fun!!

  15. WOW , How cute is this little pumpkin family , love your ideas , still laughing !!!!!!!

  16. This is just too precious. I am bookmarking this so I can do this when we move to a house with a cute front porch :) Thanks for sharing!!

  17. How cute! You just inspired me to do this with my students! They can’t have knifes at school and painting isa little messy for them, but this is awesome! Thanks for sharing.

  18. Thanks for the fabulous idea. I did them today with my son. I hadn’t planned on doing this, but when he picked up a Mr. Potato head kit I couldn’t refuse for a buck. Thanks again.

  19. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading this blog. You are very inspirational! I think I’m going to try a painted trellis wall after the holidays.

  20. Fantastic Idea. I am inspired to try this out too. I have become a regular reader of your blog because the ideas are usually quite simple but look gorgeous ! Thanks for sharing.

  21. I love these!
We may have to try this out, as well. My husband and I are being Mr. and Mrs. Potatohead for Halloween this year — will post pictures after Halloween.
Thanks for the inspiration, as always
    Jenny

  22. I saw the Mr. Potato Head Pumpkin kits at Target too. I commented to my husband that they were going back to their roots. The Original Mr. Potato Head was a bunch of eyes, nose, mouth that kids had to stick in a real potato!

I like yours better. I am so glad you didn’t choose to use their “angry eyes” :)

  23. Aren’t these fabulous! I actually did this in my preschool classroom with the kids last year and they loved it! Its fun to see all the different ways the kids did them. Love how you did the wash on them though- very creative!

  24. I love, love, love those! I’m not sure what I like best…the little faces or the little arms, lol.

  25. With the holidays quickly approaching and needing some new ideas, this decorating of the pumpkins is deh bomb! I’m so excited to do these this year! Now following you on FB and Twitter, Great talent and ideas!
