Syrah + Sorbet

By Kate Riley August 11, 2010

syrah ripeningHo hum, life is moving at a slow pace this week and I’m getting lost in it.

I’m catching up on some summer reads I’ve been waiting to dive into.

We’re watching our syrah grapes ripen in the sun.

We’re building tents out of canvas tarps in the backyard.

We’re taking long naps under the ceiling fan during the hottest days.

We’re picking our share of blackberries.

We’re begrudgingly back to school shopping.

And I’m making grown up sorbet ~ a healthier alternative to my ice cream fixation.

blackberry wine sorbet

Blackberry Cabernet Sorbet

2 cups water

1.5 cups sugar

24 oz. blackberries

2 tbsp lemon juice

2-3 tbsp cabernet

(or any dry red wine like merlot or syrah)

Bring water to simmer in small saucepan, then stir in sugar until dissolved to make syrup, refrigerate to cool.  Meanwhile, rinse and puree blackberries, then pour through mesh strainer to remove seeds.  Add blackberry puree, lemon juice and wine to syrup, blend together.  Process mixture in ice cream maker per manufacturer’s instructions.  Freeze processed soft sorbet at least an hour before serving.

Wishing you long leisurely days spent relaxing in the summer sun, enjoying what’s left of the season before the beauty of fall is upon us.

  1. I wanna come stay with you! We are already back to school (day 3 today), and I am in the midst of volleyball uniform orders…so not fun. Summer went too fast.

  2. I wanna come hang out with YOU!
No, wait, better yet- why don’t YOU come help ME with my master bedroom!!!! :-)

  3. Beautiful vines, beautiful child, beautiful dessert! So nice to grow your own food and have your children learn about where food really comes from, isn’t it?!

  4. That sorbet looks so yummy!! Pretty, too! Can’t wait to give it a try. Enjoy your last few days of summer before your kids go back to school.

  5. The fact you can be outside at all beats the terribly hot weather we have right now. Those grapes are just gorgeous with the multi-colored ripeness. I think the sorbet would be delicious. I kept telling my husband that the sorbet recipe I posted this week would be good with a little vodka mixed in…you may have made my point for me!

  6. i know you are just talking about sorbet, but i love how you take time to enjoy the simple things in life. i need to do more of that. thanks for the little push. hugs..

  7. Ummm. . . sorbet! What a great idea! I just made another batch of homemade vanilla ice cream–still my favorite!

Those grapes are absolutely beautiful. I have to admit that sometimes I’m so jealous of you, living as you do in glorious California. My oldest son just got home from spending 10 weeks in Santa Cruz–he’s having a hard time getting re-adjusted to the North Carolina heat!

  8. You’re having hot weather? I’m jealous!! August in the East Bay is typically hot and it has gone over 79 lately. We had to go to Tahoe to get warm weather :D. Your grapes and sorbet look amazing. Thanks for sharing the recipe, I can’t wait to try!
