Greetings everyone, welcome to the Stars & Stripes Party !

Don’t you just love the Fourth of July ?

I do!  It’s truly one of my favorite holidays.  There’s something about the traditions of barbeques and fireworks, and all that red, white, and blue that gets me in the mood to celebrate the land of the free and home of the brave.

Designer Spotlight: Doryn Wallach

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Today I have another designer in the spotlight:  New York based interior designer Doryn Wallach, a veteran of several design firms and also a contributor to ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Doryn’s goal in designing for her residential and commercial clients is to create a unique, beautiful and workable interior that improves their quality of lifestyle.  She has quite the eye for mixing traditional and modern styles, elegance with comfort, and plenty of pattern and texture for interesting interiors.   Doryn was kind enough to send along some pictures of her most recent project, and also answer a few questions for me!

Q:   I love your mix of traditional style with modern glamorous pieces, your spaces are so elegant, yet comfortable too.  How do you begin the process of decorating?

“I always start with the bones of the home because you shouldn’t stray too far from the style, but you can always add a "twist". For example, in a Nantucket cottage, you may want to bring in beautiful linen fabrics and modern caned chairs, but throwing in a fun wallpaper or oversized modern light fixture can glamorize it a bit and make it feel a little more modern.”

Slipcovered Settee

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

I love it when a plan comes together !  I’ve been working on the living room all week, mostly the wainscoting, but one of the other pieces I also wanted to makeover was my brown velvet settee.  I love the shape of this piece – it fits on the wall next to the fireplace to perfection, but I was sooooooo done with the dark brown color.  Rather than pay big bucks to have it reupholstered, I decided, for now, to simply slipcover it.

I’ve mentioned before that my sewing skills are limited, but over time, I’ve been challenging myself to take on more intermediate sewing projects – this was certainly one of them.  I confess, I’ve admired the slipcovers across blogland for a long time, but this is my first attempt at slipcovering a piece of furniture myself.  After four days of piecing it together, bit by bit, I’m pretty satisfied with my new summer linen slipcover.

Lovely readers, meet my little settee and her pretty new linen slipcover.

state fair

Hey everyone – it has sure been a crazy week around here, with all the big projects on the back burner for the last few days.  Ah, summer.  It’s supposed to feel relaxing, but I’ve been busier than eeeeeeever.   Between running the kids to their swim lessons each day, and the obligatory trips to the county fair, I’m already in need of a little vacay from my summer vacay, know what I mean ?

Dare to Do Dark

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

It’s the beginning of summer, and I feel the need to make everything around me light and bright, but I’m finding myself increasingly drawn to the drama of dark painted walls.  When it comes to painting a room an intensely dark color like chocolate or charcoal, I confess I haven’t taken the plunge because I fear the dreaded cave effect that may occur.  Oh, I’ve tried samples on the wall, but in the end I opt for the lighter hue.

I especially love high contrast in design, juxtaposing the crisp white against the dramatic dark.  An intensely deep hue, balanced with plenty of light, conveys sophistication and elegance – two feelings I absolutely adore in a space.   Here are some intense walls that I’m drawn to these days.  Fancy that, in the middle of June.
