New Arrival

By Kate Riley April 7, 2010

There was a mention in House Beautiful last November about this brand new product by Hudson Paint: colored  chalkboard paint.  I was completely intrigued, but then I forgot all about it until the the other day.  Then I remembered, and I just had to order some for a special project I’m working on.  I’m just so excited so I must share with all of you what came in the mail today: this quart of ‘Deep Ocean’ Hudson chalkboard paint !

Hello gorgeous.

hudson paint deep ocean

Be still my heart.

Where have you been all my life ?

It’s a little expensive compared to latex paint, $25 a quart, plus $7 shipping, but with the 24 colors available, can you imagine the possibilities ?  Entire walls of breakfast nooks, kitchens, dining rooms, kid spaces, playrooms and closet doors covered in these amazing colors.

And talk about cool DIY crafts too – imagine the message centers and labels you could create !  Of course I’ve read you can DIY your own chalkboard paint with tile grout but some of the reviews are mixed.  You can find several ‘recipes’ online, but something about buying this smooth textured paint ready for instant use makes me so giddy.

I plan on using my ‘Deep Ocean’ this weekend for a special project I’ve got planned for my boy’s room.  To see the full spectrum of Hudson chalkboard paint colors, look right here.  Another company, Tilano.net has a few colors available, but their chalkboard paints are more expensive.   Also I found out that Crayola has a line of colored chalkboard paint available here, again slightly more expensive.

Yes, it’s a whole new world of paint.   Let the fun begin !  Have you ever used or made colored chalkboard paint ?  What were your results ?

  1. Love it and can’t wait to see how you put it to good use! Opens up a new door of opportunity and creativity.

  2. I’m not sure if the Hubs would have liked the bright blue for our cabinet of chalkboard, but I would have loved it! I may have to check out the other colors! Can’t wait to see what you are doing!

  3. That color is gorgeous! I need to seriously start thinking about whipping my office into shape so I can finally have a reason to try chalkboard paint. Can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  4. I just bought chalkboard paint at Home Depot last week. I went with the black but they did have cans of white that could be colored at the paint counter. It was around $13 for 30 oz.

  5. I am so glad to hear about this! I have a chalkboard project in mind and wondered if I could get it in something other than black! YAY!

  6. I haven’t used the paint before. I don’t have small kids and I don’t really have a place to put it. I can’t wait to see your project.

  7. I think that “Deep Ocean” color, which I think of as “peacock”, is my favorite in the whole world. Love the idea of it as chalkboard paint.

  8. I just bookmarked the link and now waiting to see what you do with yours!! This indeed opens up a whole new world, I could very well be in trouble!!

  11. Not, yet, but I’m feeling more and more inspired lately.. I think it would be a ton of fun to add something to my back patio with chalkboard paint (I don’t know if I’d like chalk dust indoors!). Maybe this summer I’ll have to do it! Thanks for posting!

  12. I love that color! I have thought about doing chalkboard paint “frames” on a wall in our entry so that kids can scribble while parents try to enjoy adult company. Can’t wait to see your project.

  13. I just ordered Bakery Green for my sewing/craft room and the Addiction brown for some labels in the kitchen. I’ve been wanting to do the labels on my glass canisters for some time so this is the perfect excuse! Thanks for posting this and can’t wait to see what you end up doing.

  14. I’m absolutely LOVING the color you chose. Can’t wait to see what you do with it. The fact that it’s chalkboard paint…too fun! (would be great in the kitchen too :)

  15. Love this idea….tried to track some down ages ago after seeing a picture of pink chalkboard paint (was used in a guest wc…with complementary chalk to graffiti with!). Anyway, off now to see if I can track a supplier down in the UK or Ireland…wish me luck ;-)

  16. Yay! Excited to see a such a rich, saturated color and to hear that you’re playing around in your son’s room. I’m dying to see more of your handiwork in a non-girly, non-romantic space.

  17. colored chalkboard paint, oh my! I dont know if this is a good thing or bad thing for me.. I might start painting chalkboards throughout the house.. I read a tutorial once about coloring your own chalkboard paint, but I forget how it was done. This might be much easier though.

Thanks for sharing, I have to go look it up now!

  18. I love that color! What a great product! Can’t wait to see what you do with it.
I am wanting a chalkboard in Adam and Eli’s room (when I get to re-doing it!)
    Blessings!

  19. LOVE – colored chalkbaord paint, you can make your own colors following Martha’s Stuwart how to on her website, gotta love Martha

  20. I love the color, I can just imagine the message boards as well. So cute and unexpected to see colored chalkboards.

  21. I LOVE Bakery Green! I was thinking about doing a light green in my kitchen with 1 small wall as chalkboard – black I guess, but this could be cool with my white cabinets! Do you think I should paint a whole room with it when some parts won’t be written on? Maybe I could get regular paint color matched…. hmmm. Thanks for sharing!

  22. Love that colored chalkboard paint. I have never even used the black paint anywhere, so I see I have lots of choices now. Love & blessings from NC!

  23. I bought “Army Boy” I used it in a large frame i silvered leafed, I loved it …….I wished I had all the colors.

  24. I’m so excited about the colored chalkboard paint! We painted the inside of our kitchen door a few years ago with black chalkboard paint. It’s very useful for writing notes to each other, to do lists, we decorate it for each holiday & birthday. Now that my mil with dementia is living with us we write the day & date & who’s coming over to help her every day so she can remember. Everyone who comes over comments about it. Just found your blog & love it. I’m adding a link on my blog.

  25. I did the Martha Stewart chalkboard paint in hot pink for bulletin-board tiles I made for my daughter’s room. The tile grout powder is white so it tends to fade the color of your paint, and it’s also kind of gritty so you don’t get a nice smooth chalkboard. It does take the chalk, but it doesn’t erase very cleanly. I wasn’t completely thrilled with it.
BTW I found your blog today and I am enthralled! I have several painting projects I’ve been procrastinating on, but you have inspired me! Thank you!

  26. I used it in my kids playroom and i love it, but the chalkboard keeps coming off when we wipe it…you can see the paint primer underneath it..what do you do to prevent this?

    • Hi Deborah, I used two coats of the paint for my little boys’ chalkboard table and let it fully cure, I haven’t had a problem, you might try wiping it down, sanding it gently and giving it another layer of paint for more durability.

  27. I must have been living under a rock. I had no idea someone was making colored chalkboard paint in such vibrant colors. Awesome!
