Little Sprouts and a Giveaway
March 9, 2010
I have a really hard time staying focused at Lowes, or any home improvement store for that matter. Asking me to go into a home improvement store and pick up only one particular thing is pretty much like asking a kid to ignore the cookie jar on the counter. It ain’t happening. I start meandering down aisles, dreaming up projects, then all of a sudden I’ve disappeared into a vortex. I’ve forgotten why I was there in the first place, daylight has disappeared, and they’ve sent out a search party.
Such is the story of this little purchase two weeks ago. I was at Lowes to purchase something simple like sanding pads, then before I knew it I was in the garden department again. It was there that a ‘Jiffy’ Greenhouse stared me down and beckoned me toward him. He somehow convinced me with his $6 dollar price tag and numbered tutorial that he needed me. Or I needed him. Apparently, I didn’t need to use the egg cartons I’ve used in the past to start my sprouts. This year, I needed a ‘Jiffy’ Greenhouse.
Tomatoes, basil, and delphinium are three of my favorite things to grow. So I thought I’d get a head start on a few of my garden essentials.
I watered the funny little soil pellets.
Planted my seeds. Got my fingers dirty.
Placed my greenhouse in the window, and ten days later – sprouts !
Will wonders never cease. :-)

I don’t have a green thumb unfortunately. But I do get the occasional Japanese rose. Sadly that’ as far as I get. Unless you count them weeds!
I have this weird flowering plant that I don’t know the name of. My neighbour has the exact plant but a different species. Hers grows like mad and looks more like a bonzai while mine only has sprinklings of leaves and flower bunches. Small white flowers that Indians usually string as offerings.
I’d so love to have my own garden someday
Corn, because they’re easy and a huge rewards for our chickens!
For mint julep summers, I like to grow mints!
My favorite thing to grow in a garden is green beans. I love the fresh taste and how easy they are to snap. My new husband and I will be trying our luck at our first garden this year!
My favorite thing I have ever planted is my magnolia tree in my front yard. I love seeing the blooms every year!
I love to grow flowers, especially perennials. However, I am challenged by the hot summer days and nights in Texas and the heavy clay soil. But, knock-out roses and nearly wild roses are a cinch to plant and I have several varieties in the borders all around my house.
Spinach and chards.
We have lived here in the BIG house, the one that you always think that you want, for 5 years now. The one with all the rules, where I can’t have a clothesline to hang my sheets in the sun, or any kind of fence that I want. It’s all new around here, and there aren’t trees, so this year- we have decided our last year to be in the “cookie cutter” neighborhood, I’m planting my favorite- Sunflowers. LOADS of them. In fact, 6 Jiffy Greenhouses full of them. My husband and I will giggle while all of the neighbors talk, and we put a for sale sign in the yard. :)
I love to have a little salsa garden. Some tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, etc.
We don’t have a garden every year but we do always plant tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro…so that we have PLENTY of salsa to last us all summer! Thanks for a great giveaway!
after this winter i can’t wait for anything to grow!! but my favorite is zinnia. thanxs for a great giveaway.
My favorite thing right now is cleome. Tall and long blooming, very pretty:)
I live in a condo … so not too many gardening opportunities for me. :) I do like to plant little pots of pansies or something colorful. And am going to attempt planting a tomato plant!
Dying to test out Picnik … a sweet membership deal would be awesome!

I know I’m late with this comment. Late for the giveaway, but not late for gardening. I, too, use the jiffy greenhouse to start the herbs. Works like a charm. By far, my favourites to grow are lavenders (currently counting about 23 cultivators on my balcony, all in pots) and basil.
Your herb collection, you have on your kitchen window, is so pretty. I’m glad you’re adding to this gorgeous display.
Now, back to my bedroom renovation… or should I keep on reading the Google Reader – all 85 unread blog posts to go through?
Hugs, Gosia
I’m a year late, but we purchased the same green house and some seeds and I’m pretty sure we have mold growing on our starts (not even a week into it.) Did you have any trouble with that? I DO NOT want mold in my house so I’m not sure how to make this not happen if we try again. Any ideas?
