Little Sprouts and a Giveaway

March 9, 2010

I have a really hard time staying focused at Lowes, or any home improvement store for that matter.  Asking me to go into a home improvement store and pick up only one particular thing is pretty much like asking a kid to ignore the cookie jar on the counter.  It ain’t happening.   I start meandering down aisles, dreaming up projects, then all of a sudden I’ve disappeared into a vortex.  I’ve forgotten why I was there in the first place, daylight has disappeared, and they’ve sent out a search party.

Such is the story of this little purchase two weeks ago.  I was at Lowes to purchase something simple like sanding pads, then before I knew it I was in the garden department again.  It was there that a ‘Jiffy’ Greenhouse stared me down and beckoned me toward him.  He somehow convinced me with his $6 dollar price tag and numbered tutorial that he needed  me.  Or I needed him.   Apparently, I didn’t need to use the egg cartons I’ve used in the past to start my sprouts.  This year, I needed  a ‘Jiffy’ Greenhouse.

jiffy greenhouse

Tomatoes, basil, and delphinium are three of my favorite things to grow.   So I thought I’d get a head start on a few of my garden essentials.

I watered the funny little soil pellets.

add water

Planted my seeds.  Got my fingers dirty.

 ah dirt

Placed my greenhouse in the window, and ten days later – sprouts !

I love growing hydrangeas. So beautiful and reminds me of my wedding day.

  4. Elizabeth says:

I LOOOOOOVE planting forsythia and peonies. They look amazing together in arrangments and make my house smell so good all spring and summer. :)

I love gardening period!! My favorites are lavender and poppies.

  6. Deanna H. says:

My favorite thing to grow are weeds… my green thumb is off the chart! Actually tulips are my very favorite but I spend so much time pulling weeds, I had to give them some credit.

  7. Renee says:

Tomatoes!!! Big juicy ones for slicing in sandwiches or chopping up for salads and salsa, little cherry tomatoes for popping in the mouth fresh off the vine. There is just no substitute for a warm tomato picked at the end of the day and used right away. Bell peppers are also a necessity. Why pay extra for red when it is just a few extra days of growing on the vine? Next come herbs. Basil, Rosemary, Sage and the ever invasive Mint for my fresh brewed Ice Tea. Woman cannot live by frozen, canned or dried produce/herbs alone!

  8. Anissa says:

I love to grow grape tomatoes. My daughter eats them by the bucketfull, so the more we grow the less I have to shell out $4 for a tiny container of them.

  9. janessa says:

I love to grow mint. It’s the only thing I can’t kill.

    Dahlias also make me smile.

  10. Karena says:

I adore pansies everywhere for spring. The last few years my daughter brings me Mandevillas from Enrights in Gardner, they are the most beautiful and the best! They vine over trellises, railings etc!! I would love, love this giveaway!!

  11. Sara says:

I love to grow vegetables and am actually good at it! I just don’t own my own plot to grow in and have to convince sisters and mother to let me grow things at theirs. I had a bumper crop of jalopeno peppers last year in containers. So on the tiny apt. balcony this year will I grow!

  12. Christy says:

In my garden I grow everything I need for home-made salsa (minus chips of course)

In my cutting garden, Definitely my Peonies

  13. Mrs. Scrimp says:

Herbs of every kind. I love herb gardening.

  14. Becca says:

I just bought a house and I’m hoping to develop the love of gardening! So far…I’ve killed three rosemary plants so I don’t have a lot of hope…

  15. Julie says:

My thumb is FAR from green, but there’s nothing like stepping out your door for some fresh basil and onions!!!

  16. dana says:

I love to fill my garden with flowers for the beauty, but by far my favorite thing to grow are my raspberry bushes. I cant keep my fingers off of those warm, moist, sweet, berries. They never make it inside the house!

  17. Lexi says:

What is your favorite thing to grow in your garden ? TOMATOES! They’re the only thing I can’t kill. We have a very very hot climate where I live..tomatoes thrive.

Tell us your most favorite thing that grows period. I love japanese maple trees and camilla’s. I planted both last spring and killed them bc I didn’t have enough shade. I love everything that needs shade of course because I can’t have them :)

  18. Stephanie says:

My neighbor shares the bounty from her wonderful vegetable garden. I plan to have my own some day, but I’m not there yet.

  19. Sara says:

Well I haven’t grown much of anything yet, but I am really excited to get a garden going this spring…my favorite thing is home-grown tomatoes…yummy!

  20. Susie says:

I have to say that I excel at growing Dandylions! I can’t seem to go wrong with those babies. :)

  21. Jennifer says:

I am starting the exact same little greenhouse tonight! My FAVORITE thing to grow in the garden is Zucchini! But I’m doing alot of new plants this year so I might have some new ones! I’m so excited to see my sprouts come up!

  22. Amber P says:

I only grow flowers – never have had a vegetable garden. My favorite flowers are two rosebushes that were my mom’s. I salvaged them before her house sold after she passed away. Now they will be in my garden. (We just built a house & moved in recently, so we don’t have a yard yet. The roses are safely planted at my mother in law’s home until spring).

  23. Melanie says:

My favorite thing is caladiums. I just love them.

  24. sangeetha says:

I would love to grow a vegetable garden this year

  25. Lola says:

My absolute favorite things to grow are herbs…easy, nearly fool-proof and fun for the kids to use in their mud-pie concoctions and my not-so-mud-pie-concoctions, i.e. dinner!

  26. The way you feel about Lowes is the way I feel whenever I go into a knitting store. I can psych myself up to just go straight to the needle kiosk and get the size 10s I need, but, once in, it’s impossible to get me out.

I love to grow containers of flowers of all kinds. My gardener handles my yards, so my containers are my little corner of gardening heaven.

  27. Carina says:

I love growing lettuce. We had our first good crop this year and we have been harvesting lettuce for over 3 months.

  28. Beechbaby says:

My favorite is herbs…I love to cook!
And I love your website by the way!!!

  29. gayla says:

    centsational girl:Lowe’s :: gayla: bookstores

(or centsational girl is to Lowe’s as gayla is to…bookstores!) that’s the way we read analogies in my classroom. :)

i am sad to say i have not a smudge, not a smidgeon, not a dot of green anywhere near my thumbs, but i loooooove me some tulips. when i lived in new york, i lived for spring when park avenue was lined with them. TULIPS! yay.

    happy almost spring!

  30. Crafty JuJu says:

I love my lavender plants & chives, I have a few :) Wih the kiddies we always grow tomatos, sugar snap peas, potatos & strawberrys, will be trying some more things this year :) x

  31. homeclynn says:

    turnips beets and flowers

  32. Sylvia says:

Right now my favorite thing are Meyer lemons. In Florida we have not been able to purchase citrus trees for years because of a Canker scare and as soon as the ban was lifted I ran to get me a Meyer lemon tree. Last year was my first season and my baby gave me three lemons (I was thrilled) and expect more this year.
I also grow peppers and herbs in those Earth boxes. Talk about wonders never cease (these things are incredible.
    Sylvia

  33. Polly says:

We generally have an EXCELLENT time with tomatoes, crook neck squash, zucchini, cucumbers, banana peppers, and jalapenos. Other than that we are pretty much S.O.L. :) Since we are so good with tomatoes we usually end up with about 100 plants. It’s strange….every year we end up with a couple odd balls off cherry, grape, and plum tomatoes. So perhaps I’ll start all our tomatoes again like I did years ago. My favorite thing that grows is my lilac and rose bush.

  34. Jill F says:

Sadly I didn’t inherit my mother’s green thumb, but I LOVE looking at other people’s beautiful flower gardens! I envision a beautiful cottage garden in my future dream home, but will have to hire a gardener to keep it from being a DEAD cottage garden–LOL! Plus give me a nice, juicy ripe tomato in the middle of summer for the best BLTs ever! :-)

  35. Krystal says:

I have a brown thumb and kill just about everything, but I am determined to do a veggie garden this year so I can make tons of fresh salsa.

  36. Jane says:

I love the garden I made by my front porch. It was so much work with planting 6 bushes and two hostas, doing weed protection fabric, putting down the rock. But I feel proud every time I look at it.

  37. Jennifer says:

So hard to choose just one, I do adore peonies, hydrangas and the smell of the lavender when it is growing. I would love to grow more veges, fruits and herbs, but I have to leave some yard for the kids to play :)

  38. MMW says:

Ohhh I love growing heirloom tomatoes. So delicious fresh-from-the-vine at the end of summer.

  39. Candace says:

I love tomatoes! There are so many varieties, and always produce lots of fruit. Yum!

  40. MichelleB says:

Basil. I love fresh basil, and I hate to pay the stores prices! We also have volunteer cherry tomatoes that come up every year. I don’t really “grow” those, but they sure do grow well!

  41. Jennifer H. says:

We live in a rental, so we can’t have a true “in the ground” garden…but last year we grew tomatoes and herbs in containers. The tomatoes really took off, despite our worm infestation. Ick. I’m going to try flowers this year though, because our porch looks so drab! I’d say my favorite thing would by hydrangea. I just love the stuff! I even used it as my wedding bouquet!

  42. Amy W. says:

Lavendar is my favorite thing to grow. It seems to thrive with my novice garden hands. It always smells so lovely!

  43. Joanne says:

My favorite flower would be orchid but they are so hard to take care of. Currently I have 5 pots of orchids in my house but only 2 are blooming right now. I guess my thumb is not that green :) My mom always plant herbs and vegetable in the garden and I always enjoy cutting them minutes before making a meal.

  44. Heather says:

I love growing the Tiny Pink Hedghog plant that I moved from my first house. It comes back every year with the most adorable pink buds and it looks like a carpet I just want pet :)

  45. siobhan says:

i looove peonys i love love love them:)

  46. Nearlydawn says:

Actually – YOU inspired me to put some new herbs in my kitchen window! Doing so required that I finally quit stalling re-pot the bigger plants that previously lived there. It is now my win-win window full of seedlings and more healthy mature plants. So, THANKS! And thanks for asking!

  47. Stacey says:

I love to grow peppers. Any kind – bell, jalepeno, banana. They are so easy and I know that I can grow them perfectly even though I don’t always have a green thumb!

  48. Caroline says:

I love carrots in a garden. I remember when I was younger pulling the little carrots out of the ground and wanting to eat them right then and there! :)

  49. Michelle says:

Herbs! It’s great to just cut fresh herbs whenever I need to spice up my cooking.

  50. Bob Trinh says:

Tomatoes: love, love, love the smell of the tomato plant itself and the bountiful colors of its fruits.

My grow love: heirloom tomatoes, green beans, zuccini, peas, and sunflowers.

  51. Abby says:

I don’t have a green thumb unfortunately. But I do get the occasional Japanese rose. Sadly that’ as far as I get. Unless you count them weeds!

  52. shiki says:

I have this weird flowering plant that I don’t know the name of. My neighbour has the exact plant but a different species. Hers grows like mad and looks more like a bonzai while mine only has sprinklings of leaves and flower bunches. Small white flowers that Indians usually string as offerings.

I’d so love to have my own garden someday

  53. Daisy says:

Corn, because they’re easy and a huge rewards for our chickens!

  54. Cindy says:

For mint julep summers, I like to grow mints!

  55. Mrs. W says:

My favorite thing to grow in a garden is green beans. I love the fresh taste and how easy they are to snap. My new husband and I will be trying our luck at our first garden this year!

  56. MG says:

My favorite thing I have ever planted is my magnolia tree in my front yard. I love seeing the blooms every year!

  57. Diana says:

I love to grow flowers, especially perennials. However, I am challenged by the hot summer days and nights in Texas and the heavy clay soil. But, knock-out roses and nearly wild roses are a cinch to plant and I have several varieties in the borders all around my house.

  58. Cody V. says:

    Spinach and chards.

  59. Christy says:

We have lived here in the BIG house, the one that you always think that you want, for 5 years now. The one with all the rules, where I can’t have a clothesline to hang my sheets in the sun, or any kind of fence that I want. It’s all new around here, and there aren’t trees, so this year- we have decided our last year to be in the “cookie cutter” neighborhood, I’m planting my favorite- Sunflowers. LOADS of them. In fact, 6 Jiffy Greenhouses full of them. My husband and I will giggle while all of the neighbors talk, and we put a for sale sign in the yard. :)

  60. Tauni says:

I love to have a little salsa garden. Some tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, etc.

  61. Meredith says:

We don’t have a garden every year but we do always plant tomatoes, jalapenos and cilantro…so that we have PLENTY of salsa to last us all summer! Thanks for a great giveaway!

  62. sharon says:

Dying to test out Picnik … a sweet membership deal would be awesome!

  66. Gosia says:

I know I’m late with this comment. Late for the giveaway, but not late for gardening. I, too, use the jiffy greenhouse to start the herbs. Works like a charm. By far, my favourites to grow are lavenders (currently counting about 23 cultivators on my balcony, all in pots) and basil.
Your herb collection, you have on your kitchen window, is so pretty. I’m glad you’re adding to this gorgeous display.
Now, back to my bedroom renovation… or should I keep on reading the Google Reader – all 85 unread blog posts to go through?
    Hugs, Gosia

  67. Jamara says:

I’m a year late, but we purchased the same green house and some seeds and I’m pretty sure we have mold growing on our starts (not even a week into it.) Did you have any trouble with that? I DO NOT want mold in my house so I’m not sure how to make this not happen if we try again. Any ideas?
