My favorite thing about this publication, besides all of the inspirational ideas and glorious photography, is the philosophy that homes and lives can be made beautiful by repurposing old things, and making treasures out of thrift store, auction, antique store, and flea market finds.  I completely subscribe to that.

Now I have two extra copies of Flea Market Style that I am proud to giveaway to two lucky winners – a $9.95 value !

Eligibility to win one of two copies of Flea Market Style:

1)  Simply leave a comment telling us about one of your favorite thrifty finds.  Is it from a fabulous flea market ?  A local thrift store ?  A cool consignment shop ?  Or just a great bargain you uncovered at a local store.   That’s all – just spill the beans about one of your frugal finds in a comment to be eligible.

One entry per person please.  Giveaway ends Saturday March 6th at 8 p.m. PST.   Winners will be chosen by Random.org.

  3. O Mom says:

I found a tourquoise leather chest at a second hand store years ago and I still get people asking me where I found it.

  4. Jill says:

I got a 1960′s blonde kid desk with chair at a church garage sale! I painted the desk and chair white, drawers bright yellow, new white knobs, and recovered the fugly seat. My daughter loves it and I love that it didn’t cost an arm and a leg!

  5. Maria says:

My best flea market find, hmm, hard to pick one :-). I think my all time favorite is my 1918 Singer Treadle sewing machine that had the original owner’s bobbins, spools and household things still in the drawers as well as the sewing machine itself in good, usable condition. Amazing. But my current favorite is the $12 chair I just reupholstered. It was sitting sadly in a corner with its hole filled fabric from use and possibly a cat clawing the back. It is an armless chair with intricate carvings on the top and the legs and with its new fabric and gimp, a little glue and some love is an eye catcher.

  8. Angie says:

I scored an 18 dollar wing back chair in perfect condition at a thrift store and my best find was in the alley behind my house. An old painting from the 50′s of Lady Castille that I plan on repainting and hanging in my bedroom. It’s a lovely old ornate huge framed piece. I love free!

  9. K(is)Sing says:

My ultimate find is still my 9 foot long Dining Room Table from Craiglsist! Only $150 bucks!!! It’s a hand made trestle table with old refurbished hickory hardwood floor boards fashioned into a tabletop. Once I stripped off 3 layers of poly, it’s absolutely gorgeous!

  10. Jenny says:

Honestly, some of my best finds have been off of Craigslist. Great finds include antique, handcarved chairs; a solid oak dresser that I plan to distress and antique finish; several mirrors that I painted champagne (thanks CG–got that idea from you!); end tables that I painted and stenciled. Nothing like giving a piece a brand new identity!

  11. Andrea says:

My favorite thrifted piece is one we use EVERY day in the spring, summer and fall. My husband’s office was remodeling and he brought home one of the old conference room doors. It is ten feet by 3 feet. We had some steel table bases in the garage that we had picked out of a streetside junk pile months before. Put the two together and we have a HUGE outdoor table, perfect for our family of 7 for all that alfresco dining!

  12. Jayne says:

I discovered advertisements pulled from old (’20s and 30s) magazines. I frame them with frames I get from thrift stores or on sales at Michaels/Joanns. They are great conversation items and inexpensive and unique wall art. My problem is that I’ve run out of space! BTW, I am so happy to have discovered your blog a few months ago. Thanks for sharing your great ideas.

  13. Pam Kozel says:

My husband and I found a set of wrought iron furniture (patio table with four chairs and love seat with two side chairs) at a big barn full of this and that before we were married. Thirty-three years later and many different coats of paint and we’re still using them all in our backyard. Never found anything I loved more.

  14. nfmgirl says:

I like the lot boxes found at estate sales and auctions. You can get a bunch of boxes for a few dollars, and sometimes you find great little treasures hiding in the boxes!

born and raised in warm + permanent summer kauai, i now live with my husband in 9-months-of-winter bozeman, montana. our first trip to scout out what thrift stores in montana had to offer was quite surprising. there, in the thrift store, was an authentic HAWAIIAN conch shell [the kind of shell that you blow into and it makes a beautiful sound]. all of a sudden, i was back in kauai. i could practically feel the sand squishing in between my toes, despite the fact that my toes were neatly tucked away in thick wool socks. all that for a price tag of $20. pretty great day!

  16. Abby says:

I like the gold leaf painted photo piece. I like it very much. Got it at a sort of flea market in Australia. Very pretty one. I need to go flea market shopping more often. Unfortunately my country doesn’t do those! How sad.

  17. My favorite find was thanks to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore–a carved wooden screen. It’s gorgeous. I managed to get it, a lovely armoir, 2 lamps, 2 gorgeous wooden bins (I use one for trash & the other for umbrellas, etc.), a dining room table top and a chair for $200. Go ReStores!

  18. shiki says:

I don’t get to go to flea markets but I did find some real cheap glass pendants that if original, cost a heck of a lot more! Found it overseas so it was a great find. I bought quite a few for myself and friends as presents

Thanks for this giveaway! I’d really lose this one. Just up my alley although it will only be for knowledge and pretty pictures for now

  19. jenn says:

We have a very cool thing here called the Dumptique — its been open for years. People bring things that are still useful, but for whatever reason they don’t want them anymore, and they are free for the taking. My favorite things are a pair of wood turned mid-century lamps from Paul Hanson. They needed new harps and new shades, but even the wiring is perfect! I have gotten baskets and boxes fro there, and a whole huge set of Lincoln Logs for the kids. The best thing is, its all free, and we keep it all out of the dump! I cant wait until it it reopens this weekend!

  20. Nancy says:

An old rocking chair that I painted crisp white for summer days on the porch!

  21. connie tacazon says:

I am totally new to thrifting and repurposing so this magazine will be extremely helpful! I’ve only begun with containers . . . metal or wood baskets, boxes, stuff to contain other “stuff”. Thanks.

  22. Amanda says:

Shopping almost exclusively for home dec stuff at yard sales and thrift shops has turned up the best stuff. My current favorite find is from Freecycle. It is a gorgeous old drop-leaf table with an ancient worn patina and the beautiful glow of old wood. Its battle scars make it perfect for the kids’ playroom – it doesn’t matter if a Tonka truck crashes into the leg, it just adds character!

  23. Laura says:

I found a brand new kelly green Elie Tahari shirtdress at Goodwill last week for $2. I am so amazed at my luck!

  24. Catherine says:

For me, it is a round dining table with the most beautifully shaped pedestal leg. I can’t wait to paint it yellow!

  25. Hillary says:

I love all the cool print blocks that I find. I just can’t help myself.

  26. Sharri says:

Beautiful set of dishes at the local thrift store!
Oh, and I found a bosch mixer at one too!

  27. PATTY M. says:

My best flea market find was free! A kitchen table and chairs you can see here:
    http://sergioandpattymartinez.blogspot.com/2010/03/kitchen-table-redo.html

I love the colors and how clean it looks even in black!! I also bought an antique chair with a hideous seat and I have upholstered about 3 times, and am about to paint and do it again!!
I would love to have one of those magazines!!

  28. Raye Marie says:

How could I pick just one? I have a great stack of vintage table linens that I have collected at yard sales, thrift stores and flea market. I love each patterned and colorful one individualy. Seeing the whole stack of them together however, makes my heart sing!

  29. Rachelle Scott says:

My favorite is an old rustic white church bench that I found on Craig’s List. It is right on my front porch accenting my garden and planting station. It just makes the space and is my little happy place!

  30. michaela hoenigman says:

We have a Savers thrift store right down the street from our house. On Mondays they mark down a certain color tag to .99! So even if it is $19.99 it is now .99! So far the best thing I have scored was this great solid oak headboard that I simply sanded, and painted with paint I already had!
I am definitely addicted to thrifting!

  31. Roberta says:

Thanks for the sneak peeks…this magazine looks fantastic. Thanks for the great, fun giveaway:D

  32. Sylvie says:

My favorite find is actually an antique door handle with a beautiful patina. I found it in a huge jumble of a flea market on a trip to the country last summer. I just love the shape and the color of it, but so far I have not used it, I am keeping it as a treasure!

  33. Madeline says:

My best thrift store find is my bedroom set. I got a solid wood desk, chair, twin bed, and dresser with dovetail construction for only $50 or so. They were really beat up, so I stripped off the old stain and restained each piece with a dark walnut color. It was a ton of work, but now every time I walk into my bedroom, it makes me smile because so much blood, sweat and tears went into the furniture!

  34. Vonda Morga says:

my best find was actually at a garage sale. i had been searching for a large antique wooden bowl, but refused to pay the $75 and up that the local antique stores were asking. while walking up to a garage sale, i noticed a wooden bowl. from a distance, it looked perfect. when i walked up and saw it, it was absolutely PERFECT! however, there was no price on it. that is one of my major peeves is to find something that i love that isn’t priced. i was about to go ask the price when the lid of the box that that bowl was sitting on top of flipped over. on it in HUGE black letters were the word FREE! i could hardly contain myself. i of course asked if the bowl was supposed to be in the free box, and the lady replied absolutely – that she couldn’t wait to get rid of the old thing. well, i couldn’t wait to take it off of her hands.

  35. Aimee says:

I recently had to meet my mom at a junk store to help load a huge hulk of an armoire she had bought for $75 and ran across a wonderful 5′ mirror with great detailed wood framing that will work perfectly in so many spots in my house and I got it for only $5! The glass alone would cost way more than $5 not to mention the woodwork!!

  36. Jennie says:

My favorite find as of late? A true vintage 50s handmade apron found at a church rummage sale for $5! It’s beautiful, one-of-a-kind and I love it!!

  37. recently find! … an old 4 drawer desk that i am going to cover completly in mirrors.. i measured it today..

  38. I think one of my favorite finds has to be this scale I found at a flea market while visiting family in Kentucky over Thanksgiving. It looks like a kitchen scale but on the face it has little baby drawings– a baby scale?! I hadn’t seen anything like it before! I love it’s chippy blue, kind of rusty finish.

  39. Darlene Rugg says:

One of my finds was at the local Goodwill. My mother was converting a large double door closet to a sewing nook and told me to keep my eye out for a narrow table. I found a long but narrow, solid wood desk that had been marked down to $9.99. It fit the space perfectly.

  40. Rebecca says:

I recently found two great apothecary jars at a thrift store for (get this) $2.80 for both of them! My favorite great “find”, however, was actually free. It’s my marble top dresser from my grandmother’s house when she passed away. It’s priceless to me!

  41. Megan B says:

I have just gotten started with looking for thrifty finds, so my favorite right now are a pair of end tables that I got at a garage sale for $8. I painted them a beautiful chocolate brown. I really want to find more projects now!

  42. Melaniesd says:

My favourite place to “hunt for treasures” is a local consignment store called the Urban Cottage, here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It’s so cool. It is inside an old bank building wqith 15 foot ceilings that are full of detail and paint. You never know what you will find. I have been fortunate to purchase a vintage beaded clutch which I used in my wedding, and a fantastic dinningroom table.
I love to visit the store just to look at the pretty things.

  43. Martine says:

I found a great large oval mirror that only needed the frame painted in a nice color for $1.00. It is now freshened up and looks lovely in my living room.

  44. Joy says:

My fave thrift store find is my Favolina English Garden china coffee service for $14.99. Then two weeks later on my next trip I found the matching dinnerware complete service for 4 for only $7.50! I love 50% days at my thrift store.

  45. dm says:

my favorite place to thrift is my in-law’s basement! They have saved everything, and the place is cavernous. my favorite find is an old chair that belonged to my father-in-law’s brother before he passed, it has a place of honor in our reading nook.

  46. Jared says:

We found our kids bunkbeds at a garage sale for 50 bucks and repainted them a nice chocolate brown color. Later we found online that they are from Land of Nod and should have cost like 1200 dollars…

  47. Jody says:

We answered an ad in the paper for a player piano – “Free to Good Home.” The woman had interview several others and had not found the right home until us. After she picked us, she gave us the piano and all the player piano rolls for FREE!!! I love it!

  48. Cheryl says:

A Hoosier cabinet in perfect condition found 36 years ago in Missouri for $25!

  49. Very Married says:
