DIY: Thrift Store Coffee Table goes Glam

I circle the local thrift stores like a vulture. Last week at the St. Vincent de Paul, I saw an abused coffee table with a beveled glass top and really great potential.
The price tag read $25. I walked away. I came back two days later to bargain, and she was still there, but marked down to $17. Yay for me!
I wrestled this puppy into my car with the help of my mom (thanks Mom!) and gingerly drove home, far below the speed limit and while biting my fingernails, cause I could hear that glass rattling in the back. (I guess we should have asked for more duct tape.) At home, I prepped it for its spray paint makeover.
Great lines huh? I was really tempted to keep it a cream color, but then changed my mind to go bronze to coordinate with my other outdoor furniture. I can always go back.
First step: Set glass top aside. Using some light grade sandpaper, go over rusty spots. (I am always super careful with old pieces because you never know if you are working with lead based paint.) Wipe table down.
Second step: Spray paint with my BFF: the Rustoleum line of indoor/outdoor spray paint in Antique Bronze which covers rust and lasts for years. I love this stuff.
Third step: While the first layer of spray paint dried, I put my Dad to work with what he refers to as “a little spit and a razor blade” to remove gunk on glass. (Couldn’t find my ‘Goo Gone’.)
Fourth step: Apply second coat of spray paint and let dry overnight.
Fifth step: Replace beveled glass top and display outside with other furniture.
Cost: $17 plus two cans of spray paint ($7) for a total of $24.
Now all I need is a really great outdoor rug, some iced tea, and my design mags. Helloooooo summer.

Next time you want to remove ANY TYPE OF GUNK from mirror/glass, use newspaper and white vinegar! No elbow grease, comes right off!

Nice! I actually saw a coffee table very similar to that one today at my thrift store marked $14.99. I was so tempted, but then realized that I had other stuff in the car and couldn’t fit it in. If it’s still there when I go back, it is mine.
